Diversity Profile - ASA Catherine Sanders

I am the mother of two daughters, both of whom were born and grew up while I have been working in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Since January 2009, I have been the supervisor of 18 felony trial assistants in 6 courtrooms at 26th and California who try everything from armed robbery to criminal sexual assault to murder cases.

More than 25 years ago, I was a high school English teacher in the south suburbs when I started as a night school student at IIT Chicago Kent College of Law. In 1985, I joined the office and shortly afterwards was married. In 1987, I had my first daughter, Sarah, who is now a senior at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I continued on in the Office moving to felony review, preliminary hearings and night narcotics court.  While I was a 3rd chair in the trial division I had my second daughter, Hayley, now a freshman at the University of Notre Dame.  A short time later I was divorced while assigned as a new 1st chair before Judge John Mannion. For the next nine years, I tried cases in various 1st chair assignments until I was promoted to Deputy Supervisor of the Traffic Division in July 2002. A year later, I was appointed Supervisor of the Traffic Division, where I supervised 21 ASAs who prosecuted DUI and Driving on a Suspended/Revoked License cases as some of their first assignments in the Office.
