As an African-American ASA, I am both an ambassador for the State’s Attorney’s Office and a representative of the larger African- American community. I appreciate the State’s Attorney’s support and recognition of the importance of the National Black Prosecutors Association and the need to have ASAs as members of the Association.

As supervisor of the Child Support Enforcement Division, I supervise our ASAs who represent clients of the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) in civil proceedings. When I began working in the SAO, HFS clients were pleased to see an Assistant State’s Attorney who looked like them. Court reporters, clerks, and sheriffs expressed the same feelings.  Yes, there were instances when someone did not expect to see an African American ASA in the courtroom; and therefore thought I was a litigant instead of an attorney.  Over the years, the number of ASAs of color has increased, but I believe that there is still a need for more.
