150-year Prison Sentence for 2006 Murder of Honor Student

Cook County prosecutors secured a 150-year prison term today for a Chicago man who fired an assault weapon and a stray bullet from the gun struck and killed a 14-year-old Harper High School honor student while she was getting ready for school in 2006, according to the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Judge Joseph Kazmierski sentenced Carail Weeks, 28 today for the murder of Starkesia Reed after a jury convicted him in September.  This was the second murder trial for Weeks whose first trial resulted in a mistrial in December 2008.

According to prosecutors on March 3, 2006, near 68th and Honore around 8:00 a.m., Weeks exited a car and fired an assault rifle at a rival gang member and missed.  A stray bullet from the gun struck Reed in the head as she looked out the window of her home after hearing shots.   Reed was preparing for school when she was shot and killed.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys John Brassil, Deputy Supervisor in District 4 and Jim Papa, of the Gang Crimes Unit for their handling of the case.
