Michigan Man Receives $25 million Bail for Murder
and Aggravated Battery Charges

After Cook County Prosecutors charged a Michigan man with first degree murder and aggravated battery to a child for fatally stabbing a South Holland man and severely injuring his 6-month old daughter, a judge set his bail today at $25 million bail, according to the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Judge Darron Bowden set bail for Eric Smith, 19 of Saginaw, Michigan for allegedly stabbing Fias Mannie, 29 and killing him.  Smith also slashed the face of the victim’s 6-month-old daughter during the incident.

According to prosecutors, on October 25, 2009, the defendant and others were in the victim’s home at 959 E. 159th Street in South Holland, when Smith attacked Mannie with a knife while he was holding his daughter in his arms.  Prosecutors said during the bond hearing that Smith slashed the baby in the face first, then proceeded to stab Mannie multiple times before he dropped the baby, stumbled outside and fell.

The child underwent surgery for her wounds and remains hospitalized.  The next court date for Smith is November 19th at 9:30 a.m. at the District 6 Courthouse in Markham.
