Court Clerk Employee Pleads Guilty to Bribery

An employee with the Cook County Court Clerk's Office was sentenced to 3 years in prison after pleading guilty to bribery for soliciting and accepting $15,000 in bribes from a woman who was attempting to bond her husband out of Cook County Jail, State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced today.

Angelo Colon, 48, of Chicago, pleaded guilty today to one count of bribery and was sentenced to three years in prison by Cook County Judge Lawrence Fox. Colon was arrested and charged in October after an investigation by State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to prosecutors, from September 2008 to January 2009, Colon was an employee of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, assigned to the Clerk’s office on the 5th Floor of the Criminal Courts Administration Building at 2650 S. California.  Colon was acting in official capacity when he solicited and accepted a total of $15,000 from the victim with the false promise
that he could bribe a Circuit Court Judge who would then order the release of  her husband, who was in jail for a pending drug case.

State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez lauded the efforts of the Investigations Bureau and Assistant State’s Attorney David Coleman of the Special Prosecutions Bureau for his handling of the case.
