FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 9, 2011 State’s Attorney Alvarez Applauds the Efforts of County Prosecutors for Participating in New Mentoring Program to Support Female Law Students The ASA Mentoring program, coordinated by the Criminal Litigation Committee of the WBAI, will pair female prosecutors from the State’s Attorney’s office with female students from area law schools, including Northwestern, Loyola, University of Chicago, DePaul, Chicago-Kent, Northern Illinois and John Marshall. Female Assistant State’s Attorney mentors will interact monthly with students interested in pursuing careers in criminal law, by sharing their experience and offering support through meetings and by shadowing the ASAs in the courtroom to see first-hand the inner workings
of the criminal justice system. “Throughout my career as a prosecutor, the support I received from organizations like the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois has been invaluable, helping me to not only achieve professional goals, but also help guide other women in the legal field to realize their own dreams,” Alvarez said. “I am extremely proud of our prosecutors who are taking the responsibility to pay it forward by serving as mentors and being a positive example for young women pursuing careers in the legal field.” The ASA Mentoring program is one of several mentoring initiatives designed in the spirit of giving back to the community to help young lawyers and students by WBAI outgoing President Kathy Gallanis and the Criminal Litigation Committee, co-chaired by Cook County Judges Rosemary Higgins and Angela Petrone. Currently 150 people, including 75 Assistant State’s Attorneys and 75 students have signed up to participate in the ASA Mentoring program, which will host an inaugural “Meet and Greet” on May 20th in Chicago at the Parthenon Restaurant from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. For more information about the WBAI’s ASA Mentoring program, please contact Assistant State’s Attorneys Megan Goldish at Megan.Goldish@cookcountyil.gov or Kim Ward atKim.Ward@cookcountyil.gov.
