FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: A Chicago lawyer accused of multiple counts of smuggling drugs and paraphernalia to an inmate in Cook County Jail was found guilty late Thursday by a Cook County Judge, the Office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced today. Attorney Nathan Billmaier, 35, of 1917 W. Potomac, was found guilty on two counts of bringing contraband into a penal institution and two counts of possession with intent to deliver after a bench trial before Cook County Circuit Court Judge James Linn. According to court testimony, Billmaier delivered drugs and drug paraphernalia to inmate on multiple occasions between February of 2008 and May of 2008. Although he was charged in connection with just one incident, witnesses testified that the attorney smuggled marijuana, ecstasy, tobacco and assorted drug paraphernalia on six occasions over the course of those four months. Billmaier is alleged to have worked in cooperation with the girlfriend of a jail inmate who packaged the drugs in aluminum foil that she concealed in large stacks of legal documentation. The girlfriend would then hand over the documents concealing the drugs to Billmaier who delivered the packages to inmate Jordan during attorney visitations. According to court testimony, Billmaier was paid between $500 and $700 in cash for each delivery and made a total of $3,600 for the drug deliveries. Judge Linn set a May 28 sentencing date for Billmaier. The Billmaier case was prosecuted by attorneys from the Felony Trial Unit of the State’s Attorney’s Narcotics Bureau. State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorney’s James Sarros and Joseph Beemsterboer for their handling of the case.
