FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Cook County prosecutors secured a 47-year prison sentence for a Chicago man charged with the brutal murder of a West side store owner earlier this year, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez announced today. Elvin Payton, 26, plead guilty to one count of felony murder after being charged with the murder of Michael Norton, 55 in May. Cook County Judge Vincent Gaughn sentenced Payton during a hearing today. Payton must serve the entire 47-year sentence. According to prosecutors, Payton is one of three participants charged with murder in a plot to rob Norton at his store, Mike’s Sweet Shop, 4759 W. North on the city’s West Side. On May 14, 2009, the defendants tied and bound Norton’s hands and feet before shooting him once in the head during the robbery at the store. The three defendants fled and were subsequently arrested prosecutors said. The other two defendants charged, Beatrice Rosado, 24 and Kerry Masterson 23, both of Chicago, have pending cases before Judge Gaughn. Their next scheduled court date is September 23. Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys James Murphy and Tamiko Strickman of the Felony Trial Division for their handling of the case.
