Prosecutors Secure 55 Year Prison Sentence for America's
Most Wanted Fugitive in 2005 Murder of South Side Man

A man arrested after his profile aired on the television show America’s Most Wanted for killing a south side man in 2005, was sentenced to 55 years in prison according to the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Larry Carter, 34, was sentenced Thursday by Cook County Judge Rosemary Higgins.   A jury convicted Carter in January of first degree-murder for killing 28-year-old Howard Williams in an unprovoked attack on Chicago’s south side.

According to prosecutors, on the evening of June 2, 2005, the victim met the two witnesses and Carter on the South Side of Chicago.  The men then went together to a local bar.  The men stayed at the bar for a while before leaving to go the victim’s house on the south side.  Williams then drove all three men in his car to his duplex.  The victim had recently moved into the two story home and was proud to show his accomplishment.

According to court testimony, one of the witnesses needed to leave, so the victim drove all three back to the vicinity of 67th & Peoria to pick up his car.  As the witnesses were exiting the car, the defendant pulled out a gun and shot the victim one time in the head, killing him.  Carter then pulled the victim’s body out of the car and left his body in the street.  The defendant fled in the victim’s car, which was later found abandoned in the south suburbs.  A subsequent police investigation ensued and an arrest warrant was issued for Carter.

Tips received from viewers after Carter was profiled on America’s Most Wanted lead to his arrest in July 2008 by law enforcement officials in High Point, North Carolina.  Carter was later extradited back to Cook County to face murder charges.

State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys, Kim Ward and Michelle Papa for their handling of the case.
