State's Attorney Alvarez Announces New Chiefs of Investigations Bureau

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez announced today that a veteran investigator and a former top Chicago cop will lead the investigations bureau in the office.

Ralph Dewitt, 59, has been named Chief of the Investigations Bureau, after serving as Deputy Chief since 1991.  Dewitt began his career as a Chicago police officer in 1971 where he rose through the ranks, from patrolman to commanding officer before joining the State’s Attorney’s Office.  Dewitt, a Chicago native will be responsible for supervising investigations in the areas of narcotics, public integrity and financial crimes.  He will oversee investigators who provide vital assistance for prosecutors in the execution of criminal cases.  Dewitt is the first African-American to hold this position.

Hiram Grau, 60, joins the office as Deputy Chief and will assist with the day to day operations and supervision of investigations.  Grau, is a 27-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, having risen through the ranks from a street patrolman to sergeant, lieutenant, commander and First Deputy.

“Both of these individuals have extensive knowledge and expertise to lead this essential bureau in the state’s attorney’s office, ” Alvarez said. “ I am pleased that they will continue to provide the key support that our attorneys need in our efforts to seek justice on behalf of victims of crime in Cook County.”
