FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 24, 2010 Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez recently traveled to Washington DC to testify on the issues of Child Prostitution and Sex Trafficking. Appearing before a Senate Subcommittee, State’s Attorney Alvarez testified with a panel of federal and local law enforcement officials as well as representatives of advocate groups and former victims. The hearing was held before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law and is chaired by U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL). The hearing focused on the rising problem of commercial sexual exploitation of American children. The panel also explored the challenges of treating children caught up in the sex trade as victims instead of criminals.
