Berwyn Gang Member Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison
CA Berwyn gang member was sentenced to 12 years in prison today for his role in a shooting that killed 7-year-old girl as she played in front of her home on Chicago’s Southwest side.
Justin Chapman, 25, of 3647 S. Euclid, pled guilty to Conspiracy to Commit 1st Degree Murder before Cook County Circuit Court Judge James M. Schreier.
On August 20, 2003, Chapman drove up to an individual he and co-defendant Juan Garcia believed was a rival gang member and began shooting at him. When the intended victim fled, Garcia continued firing at him as he chased after him on foot. A stray bullet struck 7-year-old Anna Mateo in the head as she played in front of her Pilsen home
.Last week a jury convicted Juan Garcia of 1st Degree Murder and Attempted 1st Degree Murder in this case. Garcia faces a minimum of 51 years in prison when he is sentenced by Judge Schreier on Dec. 20.
