Crete Roofing Company Named in Consumer Fraud Suit
Prairie State Roofing, a company located
at 1448 Vincennes, in Crete, was named in a lawsuit
filed today by Cook County State's Attorney Richard
A. Devine. The company and its owner, Scott Beutler,
are charged with violating the Illinois Home Repair
and Remodeling Act, the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act,
and the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act.
The lawsuit, filed by the Cook County
State's Attorney's Consumer Fraud Division, alleges
that Beutler agreed to replace the roof of an 83 year-old
woman and received a $3,000 deposit from her even
though he didn't have an Illinois roofing contractors
license. The suit further alleges that Beutler failed
to complete the project, then refused to refund any
money.
The suit seeks to permanently prohibit
Beutler from engaging in such conduct in the future.
It also seeks a refund for the consumer and a $50,000
civil penalty.
According to Illinois law, contractors
must possess a state license to offer or engage in
roofing services. Roofers must display their Illinois
license number on their advertising, contracts, and
vehicles. Consumers can verify a roofer's status by
contacting the Illinois Department of Financial and
Professional Regulation.
"Most home repair companies are
operated by honest people," Devine said. "But
there are also some unscrupulous people who prey on
trusting consumers, and they must be held accountable."
If you suspect you are the victim of
home repair fraud, the Consumer Fraud Division may
be able to help you recover your losses, prosecute
those responsible, and prevent others from falling
victim to the same scheme.
Citizens can contact the State's Attorney's
Consumer Fraud Division at (312) 603-8700, or online
