Illegal Dumping Alleged in Dixmoor

Cook County State's Attorney Richard A. Devine announced that his office has filed a two-count complaint against Asbestos Consulting Specialists, Inc. of Darien, Illinois, for violations of the Environmental Protection Act.

The complaint alleges that the company, a demolition contractor, dumped construction debris between 2002 and 2005 on property owned by the company at 14401 Lincoln Avenue in Dixmoor, Illinois. The property is approximately 1.6 acres in size and was conveyed to the company by the Village of Dixmoor in 1999. The complaint also alleges that the company operated a waste disposal site between 2002 and 2005 without a permit from Illinois EPA. The construction debris identified in the complaint includes wood, plastic, brick, and concrete with steel reinforcement bars. Illinois EPA has estimated as much as 15,000 cubic yards of debris at the site.

Violations of the Act carry liability for civil penalties of up to $50,000 per offense and an additional maximum $10,000 for each day that the violation continues. Assistant state's attorney Mitchell Levin from the office's Environment and Energy is assigned to this case.
