Aaron L. Weisman states attorney for the district of rhode island

Aaron L. Weisman is Rhode Island’s current designated U.S. Attorney. Aaron Weisman was nominated for the position by President Donald Trump on October 10th, 2018. Following his nomination, this was sent to the Senate for confirmation roughly a month later, on November 13th in the same year.

U.S. Attorney Aaron Weisman’s nomination was officially confirmed by the Senate via voice vote on January 2nd the following year. Soon after, on January 14th, in 2019, he was officially sworn into office as the United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island.

As the District of Rhode Island’s current chief federal prosecutor, he oversees an entire staff made up of legal and non-legal personnel. Currently, his office is divided into two litigating divisions. The first division is comprised of criminal and civil matters. The second district is the administrative division for non-lawyer matters. He oversees a staff of 20 legal personnel and another 24 employees as his support staff.

Atty Weisman prosecutes offenses of the federal kind and defends the country’s interest against all civil matters. This includes protecting the country against civil cases, lawsuits, and collecting debts owed to the United States. Among his responsibilities as the U.S. Attorney includes persecuting complex drug and money laundering, complex financial institution fraud, computer fraud, violent crime, public corruption, health care fraud, organized crime, and cases that involve international organizations.

 

Legal Work History

Before Atty. Weisman was nominated to the position of Rhode Island’s U.S. Attorney he worked in a local Providence law firm. Aaron L. Weisman worked in Jones Associates for several years, his skills allowing him to specialize in appellate practice.

Atty. Weisman was known as a career prosecutor, having worked in Rhode Island’s criminal appeals unit as an Assistant Attorney General. He held this position for more than two decades until he was appointed Rhode Island’s U.S. Attorney. In his previous post, which he held from 1993 until 2019, he worked with four Attorney Generals.

Eventually, coupled with his excellent work ethic and strong moral compass, Atty. Weisman became the criminal appeals unit’s Chief. He was experienced, too, having worked around two years as a special assistant attorney general in the same team.

While he was working in the district’s Attorney General’s office, he slowly began building up his legal career. During Atty. Weisman’s tenure in the office, he represented and protected the district’s criminal justice interests. He handled a vast number of felony cases during his time of employment in the Attorney General’s Office. This includes the appellate litigation of a number of the district’s most consequential criminal justice affairs.

Additionally, Attorney Weisman also represented the State of Rhode Island in federal court, making an appearance before the country’s Supreme Court, ready to defend the district’s interests in the finality of its criminal convictions.

Aaron L. Weisman also managed the office’s post-conviction relief unit. This unit oversaw making sure all collateral attacks on felony judgments and convictions were processed rightfully and orderly.

 

Educational Background 

Aaron L. Weisman received his bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University. Shortly after that, he earned his Juris Doctorate from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
