Bridget M. Brennan – Northern District of Ohio

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio welcomes the new Acting United States Attorney Bridget M. Brennan on January 8, 2021, following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Justin Herdman, who was appointed into the position by President Donald Trump on August 2017. Bridget M. Brennan will remain in the Office as a United States Attorney for 300 days, or until an appointee of President-elect Joe Biden will be confirmed by the U.S. Senate in the following months.

Education

U.S. Attorney Bridget Brennan is a graduate of the John Carroll University, from where she received her degree in Bachelor of Arts in 1997. She received her Juris Doctorate from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law, graduating in 2000.

Legal Career

Straight into private practice, U.S. Attorney Brennan launched her legal career as an Attorney at the Baker & Hostetler LLP, where she remained for seven years. In this capacity, she was given the opportunity to acquire knowledge and be more proficient in the legal field, particularly in the five core practice groups of the Baker & Hoestetler LLP – business employment, intellectual property, litigation, and tax.

After her seven-year service in private practice, U.S. Attorney Bridget Brennan joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio in 2007. With almost 14 years of service in the Office, U.S. Attorney Brennan has held several line assistant and supervisory positions, including being the Chief of the Civil Rights Unit, wherein she was responsible for handling and accounting for all potential civil rights prosecutions. Subsequent to supervising the Civil Rights Unit, U.S. Attorney Brennan was promoted to being the Chief of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio’s Criminal Division in 2017. In this capacity, she was in charge of overseeing all of the prosecutions within the district regarding federal criminal statutes. Moreover, she managed the Criminal Division’s different units – the Appeals Unit, the General Crimes Unit, the National Security Unit, the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Unit, the Violent Crimes Unit, and the White-Collar Crimes Unit.

Prior to becoming the Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, U.S. Attorney Brennan served as a First Assistant U.S. Attorney to former United States Attorney Justin Herdman. In addition, she also once served as the Ethics Advisor of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Apart from being a member of the Advisory Committee of the Northern District of Ohio as per appointment by  U.S. District Court Judge Dan Aaron Polster, U.S. Attorney Brennan also served as the Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee’s Subcommittee on Criminal Rules.

Several Notable Prosecutions of U.S. Attorney Brennan

With over a decade of service in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, United States Attorney Bridget Brennan has acquired vital experience in the legal field. About eight years ago, in 2013, U.S. Attorney Brennan was named in the Crain’s Cleveland Business’ Forty Under 40. At the time, she was serving as the Director of the Human Rights Section in the National Security Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio – Criminal Division. She was regarded for the many successful high-profile prosecutions that she handled, including the 2012 case involving the arson of the largest mosque and Islamic Center of the Greater Toledo. The arson attack was detailed as the most recent in the 2012 string of acts of threats, vandalism, and violence against mosques, which began in July of the same year – during the beginning of Ramadan, or the month of fasting for Muslims.

Among the high-profile cases, U.S. Attorney Bridget Brennan led was the prosecution of the Amish Bishop, Samuel Mullet Sr. The case also involved the prosecution of 15 other individuals, all of whom were followers of Mullet. Investigation and prosecution of the hate crime gained traction from both local and international news, in which U.S. Attorney Brennan worked alongside Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas Getz and Kristy Parker in 2013. After being charged for the religiously-motivated assaults, the offenders were convicted of a hate crime under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act, among other charges.

United States Attorney Bridget Brennan has also worked on several other notable prosecutions, including the successful conviction of 24 individuals who were involved in the bringing about of the $170 million collapse of the St. Paul Croatian Federal Credit Union, which is noted as the single largest credit union failure in the history of the United States. More than 20 people were convicted of crimes related to bribery and bank fraud due to the prosecution, securing about $23 million in restitution to the National Credit Union Association. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney Brennan also played an important role in the prosecution that involved a $30 million Ponzi fraudulent scheme, which falsely claimed returns from a short sale opportunity in the futures market.

Office Jurisdiction

As the incumbent Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio, Bridget M. Brennan shall now lead and oversee a staff of nearly 200 employees, as well as Northern Ohio’s 40 counties. Additionally, she shall manage the staffed Offices of the United States Attorney in Akron, Cleveland, Toledo, and Youngstown. Being the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Bridgett M. Brennan has a role in prosecuting criminal cases brought by the federal government, defending the interest of the United States in civil cases, as well as collecting debts owed to the federal government.
