Carla B. Freedman makes history as she becomes the first woman to be confirmed to the highest position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York. On August 10, 2021, Carla Freedman was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith. Attorney Antoinette T. Bacon served as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York, prior to the appointment of Top Federal Prosecutor Freedman. The Senate subsequently confirmed her to be the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official for the Northern District of New York on October 5, 2021. United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman was sworn into position by Chief United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York, Glenn T. Suddaby, on October 8, 2021.

Educational Background and Bar and Court Admissions

An alumna of Syracuse University, U.S. Attorney Freedman, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in May 1985. Three years later, in June 1988, she received her Juris Doctorate from the New York Law School. In 1989, U.S. Attorney Freedman was admitted to practice law in the State of New York and all of its state courts. In September 2007, she was admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Northern District of New York and then in the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in August 2014.

While attending law school, from June to August of 1986, U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman served as an intern in the New York County District Attorney’s Office. She also worked as an intern at the Legal Aid Society from June to August 1987.

Following her graduation from law school, U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman launched her legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney’s Office. She remained in this capacity for about nine years, from August 1988 to September 1997, prior to being appointed as the Chief of the Asian Gang Unit of the Office of the District County for the New York County. As a state prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Freedman represented the state government on behalf of the district attorney in matters including the investigation and prosecution of individuals within the jurisdiction of the state who have allegedly committed a crime.

In 2007, U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York. She was initially appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney, responsible for representing the federal government on behalf of the U.S. Attorney in investigating and prosecuting violations of federal criminal laws in the Northern District of New York. In March 2016, U.S. Attorney Freedman was promoted to deputy chief of the Narcotics Section of the Office’s Criminal Division. She held this position for approximately two years until February 2018, when she was named the Chief of the Narcotics Section.

Throughout her 32 years of career as a state and federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman has prosecuted a wide array of crimes and offenses, focusing on drug trafficking offenses, organized crime, and violent crimes. On top of that, she has recently emphasized the investigation and prosecution of controlled substance analogs and newly scheduled synthetic drugs. On the list of her most significant litigated matters include the prosecution and conviction of one of the largest and most sophisticated synthetic drug organizations in the United States. The case involved importing, processing, and distributing millions of dollars of synthetic cannabinoids. The two defendants were convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering charges and were sentenced to 30 years and 25 years in prison. Prosecution of the case led to the forfeiture of over $3.5 million, along with several vehicles and $350,000 in jewelry.

Apart from the case mentioned above, U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman handled a number of wiretap investigations under the Department of Enforcement Administration, including a conspiracy case involving the import and distribution of synthetic cathinones from a Chinese pharmaceutical company in the conviction of 18 defendants. Top Federal Prosecutor Freedman has also handled the sentencing in several litigations alone, as sole counsel, including the 2014-2016 investigation and prosecution of 13 defendants indicted and charged in a conspiracy to distribute heroin and cocaine base in the Syracuse area. Another significant litigation matter handled by U.S. Attorney Freedman is the 2010 investigation and prosecution made in collaboration with the FBI and via the VoIP communications wiretap. The defendant was sentenced to 188-month incarceration for making false promises to defraud desperately-ill victims. A drug trafficking organization was also discovered through a DEA wiretap investigation led by U.S. Attorney Carla Freedman. The investigation led to the indictment of 11 individuals involved in the Brandford Drug Trafficking Organization, a New York City-based Crip Street Gang Crew that operated to supply two counties with cocaine base and MDMA. United States Attorney Carla Freedman also handled a 1998 murder and second-degree assault of two men who got involved in an altercation, which resulted in the defendant’s indictment and his sentencing of 25 years to life in prison.

In 2014, U.S. Attorney Freedman received two awards – the Special Act Award from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York and the Administrator’s Award from the Drug Enforcement Administration, both in honor of her work in the prosecution of US v. She received the award for a second time in 2015, in honor of her work in the prosecution of US v. Mansour et al., and for a third time in 2017, in honor of her work in the prosecution of US v. Raymond & Requena.
