Clinton J. Johnson – State’s Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma

An interim Top Federal Prosecutor shall takeover in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma by virtue of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Clinton J. Johnson has been identified as the temporary successor of the outgoing U.S. Attorney R. Trent Shores, who had tendered his resignation to President Joe Biden on February 9, 2021, in accordance with the announcement made by Acting U.S. Attorney General Monty Wilkinson on the same day, requesting for the 55 remaining presidentially-appointed U.S. Attorneys to vacate their posts. On March 1, 2021, Clint Johnson will officially be seated as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma. He shall continue to be the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official for the district until a new U.S. Attorney has been appointed by President Joe Biden and has been subsequently confirmed by the Senate.

 

Appointment

The new interim Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for the Northern District of Oklahoma, who shall take over in the United States Attorney’s Office, has been named. By virtue of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, Clinton J. Johnson will temporarily lead the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, filling in for the outgoing U.S. Attorney R. Trent Shores, whose resignation was announced on February 9, 2021. The series of events occurring in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma are all in accordance to the process of changeover from one administration into another, which had been initiated by the announcement made by Acting U.S. Attorney General Robert M. “Monty” Wilkinson directing the remaining 55 U.S. Attorneys who have been appointed by former President Donald Trump during his tenure to step down from their positions. The departure of U.S. Attorney Shores will become official on February 28, 2021, to which First Assistant U.S. Attorney Clinton Johnson will stand in and serve as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma for the next 300 days or until a new U.S. Attorney has been nominated and confirmed by the Biden Administration.

 

Educational Background and Bar and Court Admissions

Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson earned his undergraduate degree from the Oklahoma State University. He subsequently took up a graduate’s class at the U.S. Army War College, later receiving his Master’s Degree. U.S. Attorney Johnson is a graduate of the Officer Basic Course, the Officer Advanced Course, the Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Army War College, and the Military Judge’s Course. Furthermore, Acting U.S. Attorney Johnson attended law school at the University of Tulsa College of Law. He received his Juris Doctorate and served as an Editor for the Tulsa Law Journal. He has been licensed to practice in several federal courts, including the Army Court of Criminal Appeals, the Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and in all of the federal courts in the State of Oklahoma.

 

Legal Career in Military Service

U.S. Attorney Johnson kicked off his legal career as a prosecutor during his service in the U.S. Army. His first assignment was to be an active-duty Army Attorney. Throughout his 26 years of being in the legal field, Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson continued to be of service to the beloved country by performing his duties in the United States Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps, even handling several leadership roles as a Colonel. United States Attorney Johnson was previously named the Chief Trial Judge and Commander of the 150th Legal Operational Detachment headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. Apart from that, Col. Johnson gave back to his alma mater by being an instructor at the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s School and the National Judicial College.

 

Legal Career – United States Attorney’s Office

With almost three decades of experience as a federal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson proves a man’s knowledge and skill. He has been a part of numerous investigations and prosecutions that involved drug trafficking crimes, illegal firearms, human trafficking, public corruption, white-collar offenses, as well as violent felonies, among other cases. Before joining the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma, U.S. Attorney Johnson was first a part of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and later, as the Deputy Branch Chief.

Shifting to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma, Acting U.S. Attorney Johnson was appointed as the First Assistant U.S. Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Trent Shores. As second-in-command in the Office, U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson was responsible for managing and supervising the criminal, civil, and administrative divisions for the Northern District of Oklahoma. To add to that, he was also in charge of managing the budget and resources of the agency while taking an active role in the hiring process and physical expansion of the Office, all at the same time. This advancement in the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma was essential to pursue its public safety mission/

 

Statement by Acting U.S. Attorney Johnson

Upon appointment, Acting U.S. Attorney Johnson expressed his gratitude for being given such an opportunity to lead. He further asserted that, under his headship, the Office would persist in forming more robust and more efficient partnerships with the local, state, federal, and tribal partners to guarantee the fair administration of justice. Moreover, U.S. Attorney Johnson stated that he would advocate for the necessary resources to make the above-mentioned commitments happen.

Office Jurisdiction

Incumbent Acting United States Attorney for the Northern Oklahoma, Clinton J. Johnson, manages and oversees all federal criminal prosecutions and civil litigations within the Northern District of Oklahoma that involved the United States. Moreover, the Office of the United States Attorney shall protect and serve the eleven counties under the Northern District of Oklahoma jurisdiction, along with the thirteen federally recognized Indian tribes within the district. Interim Top Federal Prosecutor Clinton J. Johnson is also in charge of leading a staff of more than 100 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and support personnel.
