Craig Carpenito
Craig Carpenito, along with 16 other attorneys of different districts, was appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 546, on January 5, 2018. Before the expiration of the 120 days after being appointed as interim U.S. Attorney, Chief Judge Jose L. Linares of the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey officially appointed Attorney Carpenito as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey on May 5, 2018.

Education
Craig Carpenito graduated cum laude with Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Rider University in 1996. Subsequently, he earned his Juris Doctorate at the Senton Hall University School of Law in 2000.
Legal Career
First served at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s New York Regional Office – Enforcement Division, Craig Carpenito served in the office as a Senior Counsel from 2000 to 2005, working on the interpretation of laws and regulations, policy formulation, managing compliance programs and data protection regulations, and other legal activities and matters.
Membership and Publication
As a member of the Association of Securities & Exchange Commission Alumni, Craig Carpenito co-authored the S.E.C. Compliance and Enforcement Answer Book in 2017. He wrote Chapter 11 Multinational Aspects of S.E.C. Investigations of the book, which was subdivided into four sections – Method of Conducting Multinational Investigations, Privilege Considerations When Conducting Cross-Border Investigations, Document Production, or Data Privacy Considerations, and Global Coordination.
Service at the U.S. Attorney’s Office
After his five-year service to the S.E.C., Craig Carpenito joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey in October of 2003. He was Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the first two years, before becoming Assistant U.S. Attorney. In this capacity, he was assigned numerous federal cases, focusing on health care issues. He was a part of the Securities and Health Care Fraud Unit.
Litigated Matters
Working under Governor Chris Christie at the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Craig Carpenito was able to work on a case defending the governor against North Jersey activist, who served a criminal complaint regarding the George Washington Bridge lane closure.
For the succeeding ten years, after he served to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Craig Carpenito switched to private practice joining the Alston & Bird L.L.P. He was Partner and Co-Chair of the Litigation and Trial Practice Group and White-Collar Group of the company from 2008 to 2018, before returning to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. During these years, Atty Carpenito’s work focused on corporate and governmental investigations, white-collar crimes, healthcare fraud and investigations, finance advising services, and securities and commodities litigation.
Honors and Awards
With his exemplary service in assisting both public and private companies and being a trial lawyer with extensive experience with a focus on white-collar litigation, Craig Carpenito was ranked as a leading lawyer in white-collar defense and investigations by Chambers U.S.A. In 2012, he was also named Rising Star by Law360, where he was one of only five attorneys awarded. Furthermore, he was a part of the New York Metro Super Lawyers in 2011.
Office Jurisdiction
“Your honor, Craig Carpenito, on behalf of the United States.” As Chief Federal Prosecutor for the District of New Jersey, Craig Carpenito claims, “there is no greater honor than standing up and saying that in the courtroom.” Currently, his office is responsible for managing all federal crimes and civil matters involving the United States. Moreover, the office recovers debts owed to the United States. Craig Carpenito oversees three branches – Newark, Camden, and Trenton branches – with a staff of approximately 240 employees composed of 130 attorneys and 110 support personnel.
