D. Michael Hurst, Jr.
United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, David Michael Hurst, Jr. was nominated by President Donald Trump on June 29, 2017, and was confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on October 3, 2017. A week later, D. Michael Hurst, Jr. was sworn into office by the United States District Judge Daniel P. Jordan on October 10, 2017.

Education and Memberships
A graduate of Millsaps College, U.S. Attorney Hurst earned his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science in Political Science and Government in 1997. Subsequently, he received his Juris Doctorate at The George Washington University Law School in 2000. Hurst is also a graduate of the East Central Community College and is an active member of the Mississippi Bar Association of The Federalist Society.
Legal Career
Straight out of law school, Atty Hurst began his legal career as an Associate at the Troutman Sanders LLP from 2000 to 2003, before working as a Counsel at the House Judiciary Committee – Constitution Subcommittee for four months from April to August of the year 2003. D. Michael Hurst, Jr. interest in politics grew as he served as a Legislative Director and Counsel to the former Congressman Chip Pickering. Michael Hurst provided legislative drafting services on an impartial and confidential basis, in order to implement the policy references of his Representative through legally effective legislative language. He worked with Mr. Chip Pickering for three years, from 2003 to 2006.
In the fall of 2006, U.S. Attorney Hurst began his eight-year service as an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, he prosecuted numerous federal criminal matters and civil cases. His work is to defend the United States as a principal federal litigator.
D. Michael Hurst, Jr. ran as a Republican Candidate for Mississippi Attorney General in 2015, losing to Jim Hood – the incumbent Democratic Mississippi Attorney General. A year later, Michael Hurst became Director at the Mississippi Justice Institute and General Counsel at the Mississippi Center for Public Policy. His duties include direct litigation on behalf of individuals and focusing on public policies and significant legal matters in both the District and Federal Courts. Atty Hurst served as a Director and General Counsel for almost two years before being appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi.
Honors and Awards
Attorney Hurst’s heart for public service, as well as his exemplary litigation matters, has been given recognition, including the awards from the Department of Justice – Homeland Security, and the resolution awarded to Hurst from the Jackson City Council, for his role in the prosecution of the murderer of Brittany Green.
Litigated Matters
As a federal prosecutor, Michael Hurst has worked on numerous cases, especially that of public corruption and illegal immigration cases. He has identified to have had prosecuted illegal immigration cases amounting to 40% out of 306 criminal cases, where he was either lead or sole counsel to the case. In 2018, D. Michael Hurst, Jr., as the incumbent U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, was able to prosecute two major businesses involved in undocumented immigrants, which lead to a fine of $700,000.
In line with his priorities of putting National Security on top of his list, followed by Violent Crimes, Opioid Epidemic, Immigration, and Public Corruption, Atty Hurst discussed at The Rotary Club of Jackson his plan to do justice, serve others, and be urgent during his term, in order to combat crimes.
One of Hurst’s biggest achievement as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi was what he deemed as “the largest single-state immigration enforcement operation in our nation’s history.” On August 7, 2019, he supervised the immigration raids in six cities in the whole District of Mississippi, which led to the arrest of 680 people.
Office Jurisdiction
The office of the U.S. Attorney is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. Additionally, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.
