Daniel P. Bubar
Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, Daniel P. Bubar, assumed office on September 15, 2020, under the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, 5 U.S.C. § 3345, following the resignation of the outgoing United States Attorney Thomas T. Cullen who has recently been confirmed as a District Court Judge by the United States Senate.

Education
A graduate of Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, U.S. Attorney Bubar earned his degree in Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2001. Subsequently, he graduated from Notre Dame Law School and received his Juris Doctorate in 2004.
Legal Career
Straight out of law school, United States Attorney Daniel P. Bubar began his legal career as an Attorney at the McGuireWoods LLP – a leading law firm in Richmond, Virginia that offers legal and public affairs solutions to different individuals and group entities worldwide. In this capacity, U.S. Attorney Bubar represented clients across the country in various ranges of litigation, from business to health care. Dan Bubar served in the Chicago office for about six years, from 2004 to 2010.
The legacy of United States Attorney Daniel P. Bubar as a career federal prosecutor at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia began when he joined the Office as an Assistant United States Attorney in September of 2010. In this position, Bubar was capable of and responsible for declining prosecutions as he deemed fit, filing charges, handling legislation within the district, negotiating plea bargains as necessary, and requesting indictments following investigations. U.S. Attorney Bubar was an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia for six years until August of 2016.
Following his departure from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia, U.S. Attorney Bubar joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina in September of 2016. Daniel Bubar served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office for nearly two years, until July of 2018.
Shortly after his term as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, United States Attorney Daniel P. Bubar became the First Assistant United States Attorney and returned to serve at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia. He served in this position for over two years, prior to being the interim United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia. During his six-year tenure serving under the Department of Justice, U.S. Attorney Bubar has handled a wide range of both criminal prosecutions and civil litigations but has focused and specialized on firearms, healthcare fraud, narcotics, and national security prosecutions.
Office Jurisdiction
As the Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, Daniel P. Bubar oversees the different offices in Abingdon, Big Stone Gap, Charlottesville, Danville, Harrisonburg, Lynchburg, and Roanoke. Additionally, U.S. Attorney Bubar commits to focusing on reducing gun violence and combating the opioid epidemic with the collaborative efforts of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. His office is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. Furthermore, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.
