Darren J. LaMarca
Darren J. LaMarca is the newly appointed Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi. He has been assigned to the position on January 20, 2021, upon the stepping down of the former U.S. Attorney D. Michael Hurst, Jr. Under the Vacancies Reform Act, U.S. Attorney LaMarca shall serve in the capacity for 300 days. Until such time, President-elect Joe Biden appoints a new United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi, who shall also be confirmed by the Senate.

Education and Bar Admission
Graduating from Northeast Louisiana University, U.S. Attorney LaMarca received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1982 and subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from the Mississippi College School of Law in 1986. He was first admitted into the State Bar of Mississippi in 1986.
Legal Career
Launching his legal career as a Law Clerk, United States Attorney Darren J. LaMarca served under the Honorable Roy Noble Lee of the Supreme Court of Mississippi in 1986. After his clerkship for Justice Lee, he joined the private sector and worked as an Attorney in a private law firm in Jackson, Mississippi. Later on, he moved to Clinton, Mississippi, and launched a law firm of his own in the city. Throughout the 16 years that U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca has been working in private practice at his own law firm in Clinton, he also managed to become a Municipal Court Judge and serve the City of Clinton for about five years, from 2002 to 2007. In this position, he was required to act in the interpretation, application, and enforcement of Supreme Court Rules, City ordinances, state statutes, and case law when he is to preside over municipal court sessions. Furthermore, he was expected to execute judicial duties according to the state’s laws, among other judicial duties that may be assigned by the City Council.
Following his service as the Municipal Judge for the City of Clinton, U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Mississippi as an Assistant United States Attorney in May of 2007. During his early years of service in the Office, U.S. Attorney LaMarca was able to develop extensive knowledge and experience on the prosecution of crimes involving finances, organized drug trafficking crimes, and public corruption. Prior to being the Top Federal Law Enforcement Official of the Southern District of Mississippi, U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca has held numerous leadership roles in the Office, including being the Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division, and then later on the Chief of the Criminal Division, wherein he had the role of operating on all types of federal criminal cases, as well as supervising and managing the five major units of the Criminal Division – the Appeals Unit, the Asset Forfeiture Unit, the Drug & Violent Crimes Unit, the Financial Crimes Unit, and the General Crimes Unit.

Currently, on his 14th year of service in the Office, U.S. Attorney LaMarca has previously been promoted into being the First Assistant United States Attorney to the former U.S. Attorney Mike Hurst. Darren J. LaMarca received a commendation from former U.S. Attorney Hurst, who described him as a dedicated public servant. Furthermore, former U.S. Attorney Hurst claimed that U.S. Attorney Darren LaMarca would serve the Southern District of Mississippi people with honor, integrity, and distinction.
With an outstanding background in both the private and public sector, along with his incredible leadership skills in the Office, U.S. Attorney LaMarca is expected to do exemplary work serving as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi. Office Jurisdiction
Now assuming the role of Chief Federal Enforcement Officer for the Southern District of Mississippi, Darren J. LaMarca shall be responsible for over half of Mississippi’s State and the two branches of the United States Attorney in Jackson and Gulfport. The Office of U.S. Attorney LaMarca shall also be in charge of all federal crimes within the district, particularly those involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. In addition, the Office shall also manage civil cases that serve the interest of the United States and recover debts owed to the United States.
