David M. DeVillers

David M. DeVillers State's Attorney for Southern Ohio

David DeVillers, the current United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, has been all over the world, serving as a Legal Advisor and purging corruption. He has also spent a considerable amount of his law career in Ohio dealing with gangs, gun control, drug trafficking, and other illegal doings. With his extensive experience of dealing with offenders from all parts of the world, DeVillers keeps an eagle eye on the criminals of Ohio.

On September 9, 2019, President Donald Trump nominated DeVillers for the United States Attorney in the Southern District of Ohio. The Senate confirmed the nomination in October, and DeVillers took his oath on November 1, 2019.

DeVillers’ has a vast experience of fighting against the worst kind of crimes committed against humanity. As the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, he takes all the advance and necessary measures to eradicate crimes.

Educational Background

DeVillers went to the State University of New York at Oswego for his Bachelor of Arts. He received his J.D. from Capital University Law School.

Professional Career

DeVillers’ started his career as the Director of the Organized Crime Unit in Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office, Columbus. He then joined the Department of Justice in 2004 as a Resident Legal Advisor. During his tenure, he served in Iraq, Tbilisi, Georgia, Bucharest, Romania, and Sofia, Bulgaria. He served twice as a Legal Advisor in the Overseas Prosecutorial Development Assistance and Training office of the Department of Justice.

DeVillers also worked as the Assistant U.S. Attorney at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. Once again, DeVillers led various organized crime task forces. DeVillers was the leading attorney for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Internal Revenue Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Drug Enforcement Administration.

Career Highlights

DeVillers is the top Federal Law Enforcement Officer in the Southern District of Ohio. He oversees the Attorney Office with a staff of 115. The Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of Ohio covers all 5 million people in 48 counties. DeVillers handles the prosecution of all crimes committed within the district.

DeVillers is always ready to take the lead. As an Assistant Attorney, he had already led several task forces. As the Director of the Organized Crime Unit, he had also assisted the Columbus Division of Police in many investigations and prosecutions.

By this point in his career, DeVillers has already prosecuted several federal criminal activities, including all seven murder trials in the Southern District of Ohio.

DeVillers also had the rare experience of working with the prosecution department of other countries. He worked alongside the Georgian Ministry of Justice to contest corruption, international money laundering, and trans-national crime. He also played a crucial role in drafting Georgia’s Criminal Code and introducing the system of jury trials.

Regardless of DeVillers’ diverse experiences overseas, the highlight of his career was in Ohio. In 2016, Ohio saw the largest federal murder case of its history, and DeVillers was the one who prosecuted it. It was a high-profile case with the media frenzy, and DeVillers charged 20 members of a gang, with 14 murders. The trail went on for more than two months, and the jury convicted all the defendants.

Accomplishments

DeVillers got recognition for his efforts with several accolades. He received the Mark Losey Distinguished Service Award and the J. Michael Bradford Memorial Award for his outstanding services as an Assistant United States Attorney.
