E. Bryan Wilson

On March 1, 2021, E. Bryan Wilson is the Acting United States Attorney for the District of Alaska, succeeding the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder, effective February 28, 2021. The cause of the Office’s adjustments is the transitioning into the position of the Biden Administration, in which 55 U.S. Attorneys appointed by former President Donald Trump were asked to step down from their post – Schroder included. Bryan Wilson is to be the new Acting Chief Federal Law Enforcement of the District of Alaska by virtue of the Vacancies Reform Act.

 

Appointment

First Assistant U.S. Attorney E. Bryan Wilson is to temporarily take over in the Office of the United States for the District of Alaska by virtue of the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, following the resignation of former U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder, whose last day will be on February 28, 2021. The sudden transition in the Office is a result of President-elect Joe Biden’s request, who, in early February, deliberately asked the remaining 55 attorneys previously appointed by President Donald Trump to step down. Bryan Wilson will officially begin serving as the Acting United States Attorney for the District of Alaska on March 1, 2021, announced by the Office in an online statement. He shall remain in the position for no more than 120 days, or until shall time that a new nomination and confirmation for a new U.S. Attorney for the District of Alaska takes place as per the Biden Administration order.

 

Educational Background and Bar Admission

Bryan Wilson is a graduate of Wheaton College, from where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1983. He subsequently studied law at the University of Notre Dame Law School, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1986. U.S. Attorney Wilson has been a licensed prosecutor for approximately 35 years after being granted admission into the Florida State Bar on October 20, 1986.

 

Legal Career

Prior to joining the Department of Justice of the United States, Acting U.S. Attorney Wilson first launched his legal career by working in private practice in a law firm in Tallahassee, Florida. He has dedicated eight years of his early legal career to representing clients in a broad range of civil matters. United States Attorney Wilson remained in private practice from 1983 to 1991, switching to public service upon joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida. For almost 20 years, U.S. Attorney Wilson committed to bringing justice for the citizens of the district. He first came into the Office as Assistant United States Attorney and was in charge of prosecuting a large number of criminal and civil cases, with emphasis on financial litigations. Throughout the two decades of his service in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Wilson has been given the opportunity to handle several leadership roles, including serving as the Asset Forfeiture Coordinator at the Office. In addition to his civil and appellate work, he was appointed as the Chief of the Financial Litigation Unit of the Office’s Civil Division. He was tasked to oversee the Unit’s overall work, functioning as the collector of debts owed to the United States. Acting U.S. Attorney Wilson was the Chief of the Financial Litigations Unit for about seven years, from 2003 to 2010.

 

Particular Cases that U.S. Attorney Bryan Wilson Previously Prosecuted

Subsequent to his nearly 20 years of service in the Office of the United States for the Northern District of Florida, U.S. Attorney Wilson came to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Civil Division of the Office. Later on, he became the Chief of the Financial Litigations Unit of the Civil Division. Throughout his almost 11 years of service in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Alaska, Acting U.S. Attorney Wilson has a number of cases under different categories. One of which happened to be the case against an Alaska man who filed bogus financial documents that sought nearly $1 billion against the Social Security Administration employees. The defendant was said to have filed liens at the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Recorder’s Office in February and March of 2014. The criminal complaint written by U.S. Attorney Wilson stated that the targeted individuals have no debt or “other obligation, of any nature,” owed to the defendant, in contrast to what the defendant claimed, which stated that two state agencies and seven federal employees owed him about $950 million as per the March complaint, and was also entitled to all their assets.

In November of 2017, upon the appointment of former U.S. Attorney Bryan Schroder, Acting U.S. Attorney Wilson was appointed as the First Assistant United States Attorney for the district. As the second in command in the Office, U.S. Attorney Wilson has helped manage and oversee all of the day-to-day operations of the Office’s criminal and civil divisions, along with its administrative department. He has also worked hand in hand with former Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer Schroder in a wide variety of high-profile criminal and civil cases, including the recent “Operation Cold Snap” that was mentioned in former U.S. Attorney Schroder’s speech during a press conference on February 26, 2020. The aforementioned investigation was reported to have resulted in federal charges against 16 individuals who have been involved in drug trafficking and federal firearm crimes. In addition, it was noted that Operation Cold Snap was able to seize about seven pounds of methamphetamine and 300 grams of heroin and was also able to recover 82 firearms, wherein some were reported to have been stolen.

During the press conference, former U.S. Attorney Schroder also commended the employees of the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Alaska, who he described as smart and dedicated individuals. He further stated that the Office was trained to face a wide range of complex legal issues with the aim to serve and protect the people of the state and the resources of the United States, but that he led the Office into tackling the issues in the district with enthusiasm and professionalism.

“In my experience, a great job is defined by the people. In this case, three groups. First are the women and men of the United States Attorney’s Office. You will not find a smarter and more dedicated group of attorneys and support staff anywhere. This office faces a wide range of complex legal issues in protecting the people of the state and resources of the United States. Our staff tackles these issues enthusiastically, ethically, and professionally. They make me smarter every day, and I will miss the daily interactions with all of them.”

Apart from commending the Assistant U.S. Attorneys and the support personnel of the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Alaska, former U.S. Attorney Schroder also asserted that then First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bryan Wilson would do a fantastic job as Acting U.S. Attorney. He claimed that Wilson is a seasoned lawyer and an experienced leader. This, coupled with the outstanding staff’s support, shall surely assure that Alaska is in good hands.

“Starting on Monday, March 1, Bryan Wilson, who has served the past four years as First Assistant U.S. Attorney, will become the Acting United States Attorney. He is a seasoned lawyer and experienced leader, supported by an outstanding staff. I leave the office, and the state, in good hands. While I will miss being the United States Attorney, I look forward to my next opportunity to serve the people of Alaska.”

Office Jurisdiction

As the incumbent Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer, E. Bryan Wilson is responsible for leading the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Alaska, along with supervising its increased number of staff of 33 Assistant U.S. Attorneys. On top of that, the Office shall manage all federal criminal prosecutions, and civil litigations within the district wherein the United States is a party. The Office is also responsible for collecting the debts owed to the United States.
