Erica H. MacDonald State Attorney for the district of Minnesota

Erica H. MacDonald is the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota for the U.S. Department of Justice. She is an American lawyer with a reputation for possessing extensive knowledge of the law.

Erica Hinkle MacDonald was nominated by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, on April 10, 2018. Her nomination was sent to the U.S. Senate on April 12, 2018. The United States Senate reported and approved her nomination on May 24, 2018. She swore in as the chief federal law enforcement officer of the District of Minnesota on June 11, 2018. The post was earlier held by Andrew M. Luger.

Primary Duties

As the U.S. Attorney,  MacDonald is serving her four-year term as the principal litigator for the District of Minnesota, which has four main divisions, Appellate, Administrative, Civil, and Criminal divisions. It has 130 staff, including 60 Assistant U.S. Attorneys.

The office, which has its headquarters in Minneapolis, looks after the prosecution of federal felonies like terrorism, robberies, public corruption, firearms, homicides, narcotics, cybercrime, and fraud in the district.  MacDonald is the chief federal law enforcement officer and affirms and defends the civil cases and the tax affairs of the Government.

Law Career and Private Practice

MacDonald started her law career in 1997. After earning Juris Doctor Degree, she served as a Law Clerk in the U.S. District Court of Northern District of Illinois, for Judge James Henry Alesia. In 1999, she joined the law firm Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago. Later in 2000, she also clerked for Judge Harriet Lansing of the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Prior to getting appointed as the U.S. Attorney, she was Dakota County’s Judge. She was Judge of the District Court for the First Judicial District of the State of Minnesota. She was appointed on November 24, 2009, by Governor Tim Pawlenty. She served this post from January 15, 2010, to June 5, 2018. She was re-elected for a six-year term in 2012.

Association with United States Attorney Office

MacDonald was appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota. She served the post from 2000-2009. Her key cases included frauds, violent crimes, firearms, human trafficking, narcotics, and child pornography.

MacDonald has contributed significantly to crimes against women and children. In fact, she was the prosecutor of Minnesota’s first human trafficking case. She was co-chairperson for the Minnesota Human Trafficking Task Force from the year 2006 to 2009.

She is part of the advisory subcommittees on American Indian and national security affairs.

Other than this, in her earlier days, she even worked for five years in a St. Louis department store firm in their management team for her J.D.’s tuition fees.

Education

Erica H. MacDonald joined the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Indiana) for her undergraduate degree. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in the year 1989.

MacDonald earned her Juris Doctor from the DePaul University College of Law, Chicago, in the year 1997.
