Erin Nealy Cox United State's Attorney Northern District of Texas

Incumbent Chair, Attorney General’s Advisory Committee Erin Nealy Cox is the incumbent Chair of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. She also currently serves as the duly appointed United States Attorney specifically for the U.S. District Court of Texas’ Northern District.

She was sworn into office on the 17th of November 2017, after being appointed by President Donald Trump.

 

Responsibilities as the United States Attorney

As a United States Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, her responsibilities include overseeing all federal crimes and civil litigation involving the country.

As the chief federal law enforcement officer of the Northern District of Texas, she is in charge of over 100 counties and a population of approximately eight million people. She also manages a staff of over 100 attorneys and another hundred non-attorney personnel assigned among the five-division offices.

 

Attorney General’s Advisory Committee (AGAC)

The Attorney General’s Advisory Committee or AGAC is a group of 15 U.S. Attorneys, which help the Attorney General with regards to what affects the Justice department. The AGAC was formed in 1973 and is set to oversee substantive issues and matters of policy in the government. Then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions appointed attorney Cox in March 2018. This year in February, she was then promoted to the position of the AGAC’s Chair by incumbent Attorney General William Barr.

 

Law Career History (1999 to 2017)

Attorney Cox had a varied work history before she was appointed a United States Attorney. From 1996 to 1997, she was a litigation associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP. From 1998 until 1999, she was also a litigation associate at Carrington Coleman.

From 1999 to 2008, she was working as an Assistant United States Attorney in the same district at Texas—the Northern District—where she was in charge of prosecuting several general crimes, including cybercrimes and white-collar crimes.

She also served as the chief of staff and senior counsel at Main Justice, assisting the Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Policy in 2004 and 2005. Stroz Friedberg LLC is a consulting firm specializing in cybersecurity and investigation. Attorney Cox worked at this firm from 2008 to 2016 as a member of the executive leadership team. During her time here, she was able to spearhead Stroz Friedberg’s global incident response business.

Attorney Cox has also worked as a law clerk for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas under then-District Judge, the Hon. Barefoot Sanders. She also worked as a clerk for the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, Hon. Henry A. Politz. Lastly, before she was appointed as a U.S. Attorney in 2017, Atty. Cox was a Senior Advisor at McKinsey & Co. Inc. She was also an Independent Director at Sally Beauty in 2017.

 

Educational Background

Erin Nealy Cox earned her bachelor’s degree in finance from the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her J.D. at the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, magna cum laude. Atty. Cox is also a member of both the New York and Texas Bar Associations.
