Fred J. Federici
Fred J. Federici III has been appointed to be the Acting United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico on January 3, 2021. U.S. Attorney Federici is now the Top Federal Law Enforcement Official in New Mexico and has taken over the Office after former U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson resigned.

Education
U.S. Attorney Fred J. Federici III graduated from The College of William and Mary in Virginia in 1988. He subsequently received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991.
Legal Career
Beginning his legal career as a Law Clerk at the Prince William County Attorney’s Office in the Summer of 1989, and then as a Summer Associate at the Venable, Baetjer & Howard in Summer 1990, U.S. Attorney Federici has started out in Virginia before moving to the Washington Branch of the then called Venable, Baetjer, Howard & Civiletti as a Litigation Associate from 1991 to 1995. In this capacity, Fred J. Federici III handled complex civil litigations at the large law firm and managed civil plaintiffs and civil defendants cases.
After being in private practice for about six years, U.S. Attorney Fred Federici has changed the character of his practice and spent the rest of his legal career in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico and has now served in the Office for over 25 years, beginning as an Assistant United States Attorney in 1995. From 1995 to 1999, his work focused on prosecuting drug cases and other violent crimes for four years. In 1999, the focus of his legal practice shifted to white-collar crimes.
In 2008, U.S. Attorney Federici became the Criminal Chief of the United States Attorney’s Office for the New District of Mexico, where he began handling national security cases. In 2010, he became Line Supervisor, where he was responsible for managing and overseeing the immediate work. Throughout his service as an Assistant United States Attorney, Fred J. Federici III has prosecuted a wide variety of cases and even handled scores of appeals. Prior to becoming the United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, U.S. Attorney Federici was the First Assistant States Attorney, where he was responsible for aiding in the managing and supervising the Office, as well as overseeing the Criminal, Civil, and Appellate Divisions of the Office.
Honors and Awards
With approximately 30 years of experience in legal practice, U.S. Attorney Fred J. Federici III has received multiple recognitions for his outstanding service and exemplary expertise in the legal field, including a Commendation for his exceptional work and outstanding partnership from the National Security Division of the U.S Department of Justice in 2016, a Certificate from the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a recognition for his exceptional prosecutive skills in a National Security case in 2015, a Commendation from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Office of the Inspector General for his professionalism and dedication in 2002, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in 2002, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Justice in 1999.
Among the awards he received from the United States Attorney are the Special Act or Service Award, which he has received seven times in the years 1996, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2008, 2010, and 2015, the On-the-Sport Award, which he was awarded five times in the years 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2012, and the Time-off Award in the years 2005 and 2011. United States Attorney Fred J. Fredirici III was also awarded the National Award for Investigative Excellence by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers’ Association in 2006, and the Sustained Superior Performance Award by the U.S. Department of Justice seven times in the years 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, and 2007.
Bar and Court Admissions
U.S. Attorney Fred Federici is an active member of the New Mexico State Bar Historical Committee since 2007 and of the Local Criminal Rules Advisory Committee for the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico since 2008. U.S. Attorney Federici was also a member of the American Bar Association from 1991 to 1994. Fred J. Federici III was previously admitted in the State Bars of Virginia, Maryland, and District of Columbia until 1995 when he decided to move to New Mexico and join the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico where he was admitted to its State Bar in 1994. In 1991, he was admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in the subsequent year. United States Attorney Federici is also an active member of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia since 1993. The U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit since 1995. He was most recently admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States since 1998.
Notable Prosecutions
One of the notable prosecutions that U.S. Attorney Federici led was against a Los Alamos scientist named Pedro Mascheroni, who had presented to create and build nuclear bombs for Venezuela. The scientist, Mascheroni, eventually pleaded guilty to passing classified information to an undercover federal agent posing as a Venezuelan official.
Another notable case of his includes Jamie Estrada’s prosecution, who was accused of hacking into and stealing emails of the governor he previously worked with. Estrada was the former campaign manager of Governor for New Mexico Susana Martinez. He was sentenced to serve nine months in prison for the offense.
Office Jurisdiction
As the incumbent United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, Fred J. Federici III is now responsible for managing and overseeing the District’s 33 counties. Moreover, the Office is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. U.S. Attorney Federici is also responsible for representing the interest of the United States in civil cases and recovering debts owed to the United States.
