Under the supervision of Judge Leonard I. Garth of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Geoffrey S. Berman worked as a law clerk to give an excellent start to his law career. Later on, he got appointed as an associate to Lawrence Walsh, an independent counsel who was investigating the Iran-Contra affair that occurred from 1987 to 1990. During his three years, he also worked with a team that was investigating a former C.I.A. employee, Thomas G., for tax scams.
Assistant United States Attorney (1990 to 1994)
When he left the job from Lawrence Walsh, he got an opportunity at the Southern District of N.Y. right away, where he served for four years i.e., from 1990 to 1994. Following his responsibilities as a prosecutor, he handled numerous big and serious tax and fraud cases along with the Masters of Deception computer hacking, which was in the limelight for years. It was due to his dedication that the case was solved, and his effigy was printed on the front cover of 2600: The Hacker Quarterly, a famous computer hacking magazine.
Private practice (1994–2018)
During 1994, he was called by Latham & Watkins and Mudge Rose to work as a monitor for N.Y. Carpenter’s Union from organized crime. During his work span till 1997, Berman fought for pro bono, Maureen and Richard Kanka in the federal and state litigation.
Following his experience and expertise in criminal and civil cases, the deputy general counsel, Phillip Kwon, asked Mr. Berman to represent him in front of the Port Authority of N.Y. and N.J. for the Bridgegate trial. He tried to prove that Phillip Kwon was never informed of the punishment due to the lane closures.
United States Attorney (2018 – Present)
Currently, Geoffrey S. Berman is serving the Southern District as the U.S. Attorney. He got this position after President Donald Trump fired Preet Bharara. Although Mr. Berman had already performed a number of part-time transitions for the President, he wasn’t nominated by him. It was January 3rd, 2018, when Jeff Sessions, Attorney General, announced the appointment of Berman in the Southern District with 6 more former prosecutors who would work on an interim basis until approved by the Senate. The reason why Mr. Berman had to take confirmation from the Senate is that the U.S. President didn’t appoint him.
On 25th April 2018, the Southern District’s Chief Judge appointed Mr. Berman as the U.S. Attorney under Section 546 (d) of 28 U.S.C. Such an appointment needs to be approved by the Senate, or the President can dismiss the person.
Mr. Berman dealt with all the cases so efficiently that the accused didn’t have other options but, to tell the truth. Whether it was campaign finance violence and bank fraud charges against Michael Cohen (Donald Trump’s former lawyer), insider trading and giving wrong statements by Chris Collins, Cameron (his son) and father of Cameron’s fiancé to the F.B.I. or charging Cesar Sayoc for sending homemade incendiary packages to various U.S. officials, current as well as former.
Right now, he is supervising a team of over 225 Assistant U.S. Attorneys who are responsible for handling numerous important civil and criminal cases. The areas covered by this U.S. Attorney of the Southern District include international and domestic terrorism, commodities and securities fraud, white-collar crimes, cybercrime, public corruption, gang violence, civil rights violations, sex trafficking, narcotics trafficking, and organized crimes. The office also deals in civil litigations, ranging from redress violations to litigation of environment laws and civil rights.
As a native of Trenton, NJ, Geoffrey S. Berman studied at the University of Pennsylvania and earned Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) magna cum laude and Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1981. Afterward, he enrolled at Stanford University to study law and earned a Juris Doctor (J.D) Degree in 1984. He was the Note Editor of the University’s Law Review and appointed as the law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit right away.
