United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer is now the chief federal law enforcement officer for the Western District of Texas, following his appointment made by Attorney General William P. Barr, which was announced on October 5, 2020. U.S. Attorney Gregg N. Sofer joins the office of the Western District of Texas as the United States Attorney, replacing former United States Attorney John F. Bash who has recently resigned to join the private sector, on October 10, 2020, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 546.

 

Education and Teachings

Graduating from Rutgers University, United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988 and subsequently received his Juris Doctorate from New York University School of Law in 1991. U.S. Attorney Sofer is an active member of the New York Bar since 1992. Additionally, he has provided lectures around the world, discussing issues relating to the junction of the collection of classified information or intelligence with criminal prosecution or terrorism cases.

 

Legal Career 

Beginning his legal career in the New York County District Attorney’s Office as an Assistant District Attorney and then as a Deputy Chief, U.S. Attorney Sofer has handled numerous cases in the aforementioned positions, where he served for a total of over 11 years. Throughout his long service in the New York County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Attorney Sofer has prosecuted and developed expertise in handling cases ranging from murder, firearms trafficking, violent gang cases, among other white-collar offenses. Moreover, he was able to establish himself as a skilled trial lawyer, exemplary investigator, and an aggressive and powerful advocator of justice.

Following his 11-year tenure at the New York County District Attorney’s Office, United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer became a Trial Attorney at the National Security Division at the Main Justice for around four years, from 2003 to 2007. In this capacity, he led international terrorism-related investigations and prosecution cases. Furthermore, U.S. Attorney Sofer has been an attorney in the Department of Justice National Security Division – Counterterrorism Section, where he was in a capacity to investigate and prosecute a wide range of terrorism cases. A part of investigating cases in the country, U.S. Attorney Sofer also had to focus on cases involving murders of American citizens overseas, which required him to work closely with foreign law enforcement and intelligence authorities in different countries. As a result, he traveled extensively in order to pursue these cases.

With excellent skills manifested in his previous posts, United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer became the first-ever Director of the Office of Justice for Victims of Overseas Terrorism, which focuses on assisting citizens of the United States who have been victimized or harmed in international terrorist attacks. In addition, the office manages and supervises the investigation and prosecution of cases involving terrorist incidents overseas, particularly those that include American citizens.

Prior to joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, U.S. Attorney Sofer served as Director of the Department of Justice – National Gang Targeting Enforcement and Coordination Center (GangTECC), in which he was responsible for overseeing senior agents from six different federal law enforcement agencies. In this position, he managed to bring together intelligence analysts, among other law enforcement agencies, to focus on targeting the most violent gangs in the nation, and to, ultimately, combat gang-related violence.

In 2007, United States Attorney Gregg N. Sofer joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Austin Division. In 2018, U.S. Attorney Sofer was appointed as the Chief of Criminal Division, extending his exceptional skills in handling prosecution cases, involving espionage, export-control, public corruption, terrorism, violent crimes, and white-collar offenses. As the Chief of Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Sofer supervised approximately 120 Assistant U.S. Attorneys and oversaw the district’s criminal practice.

Before his appointment as the United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, U.S. Attorney Sofer was previously a Counselor to the Attorney General of the United States, where he was responsible for criminal and national security matters, as well as crisis response.

 

Office Jurisdiction

As the incumbent United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas, Gregg N. Sofer is currently in charge of one of the largest United States Attorney’s Offices, managing a total of approximately 300 employees consisting of 150 Assistant United States Attorneys, and 150 support personnel. As the head of the office, U.S. Attorney Sofer also oversees 68 counties, with offices in San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Midland, Del Rio, Waco, and Alpine. Furthermore, the office is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. Additionally, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.
