Cody Hiland states attorneys for the eastern district of Arkansas

Cody Hiland is currently serving as the U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice for the Eastern District of Arkansas. James Cody Hiland, a Conway native, is an American lawyer. He has dwelled in Arkansas since his childhood.

James Cody Hiland was confirmed after the United States Senate carried a voice vote on September 28, 2017. He was nominated for the post by the U.S. President Donald J. Trump in July 2017.

J. Cody Hiland undertook the vows as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for the Eastern District of Arkansas on October 10, 2017. He was proclaimed as the attorney by the U.S. District Court Judge J. Leon Holmes. James Cody Hiland was proposed as the U.S. Attorney by U.S. Senators Tom Cotton and John Boozman. Hiland took over his work, right after the pledge. The position was prior to him held by Patrick C. Harris as an acting U.S. Attorney. The U.S. Attorney before, Christopher Thyer resigned on March 13, 2017.

The Eastern District of Arkansas encompasses 41 counties and five divisions. It includes Faulkner, Van Buren, and Searcy counties. The primary U.S. Attorney office is set in Little Rock.

 

Law Career

J. Cody Hiland was appointed as the prosecuting attorney in the year 2010 for the 20th Judicial District of Arkansas. He was re-elected in the year 2014. Before acquiring the post of U.S. Attorney, he was serving as the 20th Judicial Prosecuting Attorney.

Before his tenure at USAO, James Cody Hiland worked as a partner at the firm Hiland, Thomas & Cox, PLLC. He worked as a staff attorney and also has undertaken the role of Arkansas Public Service Commission’s liaison between rural and community.

J. Cody Hiland has worked in Arkansas Transitional Employment Board as a program director. He was also a legislative contact and advisor to Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Hiland, as the U.S. attorney, will be managing a staff of 59 employees that includes 28 attorneys and 31 non-attorney support personnel.

Cody Hiland will be looking out for criminal prosecutions related to violation of federal law in the District. Those crimes will include crimes linked to child exploitation, terrorism, public corruption, firearms, and narcotics. He will also be handling the civil lawsuit for the Government and prosecution cases to accumulate debts owed to the United States.

 

Academic Background

J. Cody Hiland graduated from the University of Central Arkansas, Conway, Arkansas, in the year 1993. He earned Juris Doctor from the William H. Bowen School of Law, Arkansas, in 1998.
