J. Douglas Overbey for the eastern district of tennessee

James Douglas Overbey, also known as Doug Overbey, is a former Senator, as well as the Eastern District of Tennessee’s current United States Attorney. Atty. Overbey is also the chief federal law enforcement officer of the biggest federal district.

Atty. Doug Overbey currently oversees the entirety of Tennessee’s Eastern District, spanning 420 miles, home to over 2.6 million, and serving 41 out of 95 counties. He manages employees of legal and non-legal staff and support in the headquarters located at Knoxville, and the other offices located in Greeneville and Chattanooga.

Atty. Overbey was nominated by President Trump on July 21st in 2017, to which the Senate confirmed three months later on November 10th in 2017. Doug Overbey was welcomed into office on November 21st in 2017 a week after his nomination was confirmed.

 

Law Career

Before his current position as the Eastern District of Tennessee’s United States Attorney, Atty. Overbey served for 17 years in the state legislature. He also went into private practice in Knoxville for almost four decades.

Before President Trump appointed Doug Overbey, he was currently serving his third term as a Senator and representative of the counties of Blount and Sevier. He also works at UT Knoxville’s College of Law as an adjunct faculty member.

United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, Doug Overbey became Robertson, Overbey, Wilson & Beeler’s co-founder, a law firm where he also became the senior partner in 1982. Atty. Doug Overbey is also an active member of the following bar associations: Blount County, American, Knoxville, and Tennessee Bar Association.

Atty. Overbey also worked in the Tennessee Bar Association as a member of the House of Delegates. He is a regular presenter and participant in CLE seminars. This role includes the presentation of annual legislative updates for the Bar Associations of Knoxville and Blount County.

Doug Overbey represented Blount County in the House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008. He was also on the Finance and Health committees in both the Congress and in Senate. He was also on the Senate Ethics Committee as the Chairman. Doug Overbey also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Committees on the Senate’s Finance and Judicial responsibilities.

As the United States Attorney, his main responsibility is to prosecute federal crimes within his jurisdiction. He is also responsible for taking legal action against criminal activities that involve terrorism, child exploitation, narcotics, public corruption, and firearms. As a U.S. Attorney, it is also within his duties to collect debts owed to the country on its behalf and defend the country in civil cases.

 

Educational Background 

James Douglas Overbey earned his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in Individual Directions at the Carson Newman College. He graduated from the College of Law at the University of Tennessee as the first in his class, where he received the Graduate of the Year Award. He was also inducted into the Order of the Coif in June of 1979.

 

Awards

Attorney Overbey’s work on the advancement and protection of law through liberty made him a recipient of the Law & Liberty Award in 2009 from the Knoxville Bar Association.

In 2011, he was the recipient of a prestigious award, the Community Leadership Award, for more than 30 years of his dedicated community service. He also received the Bud Cramer Award in the same year for his work on the advocacy of children’s issues from the National Children’s Alliance.

Doug Overbey is also a recipient of the Carson Newman University’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2013.
