He was sworn into office by Chief United States District Judge Rodney Sippel on October 6, 2017.

Education and Early Career as CPA

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the Indiana University School of Business and subsequently being accredited as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 1988, Jeffrey B. Jensen joined the former Price Waterhouse, now PricewaterhouseCoopers, providing audit and assurance, along with consulting and tax services. When the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had job openings for accountants in 1989, U.S. Attorney Jensen became an FBI accountant during the savings and loan failures of the 1980s. As an FBI agent, Atty Jensen was primarily working with white-collar crimes and later on became a member of the FBI SWAT team.

Throughout his 10-year service to the FBI from 1989 to 1999, Jeffrey B. Jensen managed to earn his Juris Doctorate at the St. Louis University School of Law, studying at night for about five years while working in the day. According to Jeffrey Jensen, his inspiration for going to law school was his fascination with what he witnessed in the courtroom during his time with the FBI. One of Mr. Jensen’s significant work as an FBI agent was the investigation of Keith Bearden, who, later on, pleaded guilty to 14 federal counts and agreed to settle with $1.5 million fine.

Legal Career

In 1999, following his graduation from law school, Attorney Jensen began his legal career and his 10-year service to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri as an Assistant U.S. Attorney from 1999 to 2006, and then as an Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney from 2006 to 2009. In 2010, Jeffrey B. Jensen began to run his own firm – Jensen, Barlett & Schelp – a boutique white-collar and litigation firm; however, the three disbanded in 2013, when Atty Jensen and Atty Matthew Schelp began working for the Husch Blackwell LLP. As federal prosecutors, the two worked together on a securities fraud case against the businessman Michael Shanahan Jr., including a case in opposition to the Winston & Strawn LLP, and Margulis Gelfand LLC.

Being a Lead Partner at the Husch Blackwell LLP – Government Compliance, Investigations and Litigation Practice section, Jeffrey B. Jensen has worked on several legal matters, including raising government misconduct claims in order to defend individual clients and providing legal services to corporate and higher-education clients. Attorney Jensen focused on complex federal litigations and worked on internal compliance and government investigations. He served at the Husch Blackwell LLP from 2013 to 2017, prior to being appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri.

A career as U.S. Attorney

As the incumbent U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri, U.S. Attorney Jensen has focused less on white-collar crime, and focused on combating drug-related violence instead. He mentioned that his office is to focus on crimes that can be predicated on murder. In his second year in the office, Mr. Jensen put importance on health care fraud, coordinating with insurance companies to provide robust data, in order to fully understand and discover trends regarding the health care system.

Significant Litigated Matters

In February 2020, Atty Jensen was assigned by Attorney General William Barr to a huge case involving retired U.S. Army Lieutenant General and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI but, later on, retracted the statement saying that he was actually coerced into lying by the FBI themselves. In May 2020, the Justice Department announced the dropping of the case against Michael Flynn, as recommended by Jeffrey B. Jensen.
