Officially sworn in as the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official for the District of Montana, Attorney Jesse A. Laslovich takes on the responsibility of leading the U.S. Attorney’s Office. On Thursday, June 2, 2022, U.S. District Judge Dana l. Christensen administered U.S. Attorney Laslovich’s oath of office. The newly appointed Top Federal Prosecutor was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. on January 31, 2022, and was subsequently confirmed into position by the U.S. Senate through Voice Vote on May 17, 2022. Former U.S. Attorney Kurt G. Alme served from September 2017 to December 2020 and is the immediate, precedent presidentially nominated U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana. The highest position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Montana was temporarily filled in by Former Acting U.S. Attorney Leif M. Johnson upon the departure of Former U.S. Attorney Alme during the period of change in administration in the U.S. government. Top Federal Prosecutor Jessa Laslovich expressed his gratitude to Former Acting U.S. Attorney Johnson for his leadership and dedicated service to the district for the past two years.

Educational Background, Early Legal Career, and Teaching Background

Top Federal Prosecutor Jesse Laslovich is an alumnus of the University of Montana, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduating with honors in 2003. He received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Montana School of Law in 2006. U.S. Attorney Laslovich launched his legal career as an Attorney at Datsopoulos, MacDonald & Lind, P.C. in Missoula and has briefly taught at the University of Montana School of Law as an Adjunct Professor.

Political Activities

House of Representatives

A man with a broad set of skills, a U.S. Attorney, has had a long career in Montana politics and the Montana legal system. He is among the youngest Montanans ever elected as a part of the Montana Legislature. Top Federal Prosecutor Jesse Laslovich served in the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2004. He won the Democratic primary in June 2001 after campaigning on weekends and school breaks. U.S. Attorney Laslovich remained unopposed in heavily Democratic Anaconda in the fall general election. His term in the House of Representatives involved serving on the House taxation and local government committees and being tasked to write assessments and critiques on the processes in the House of Representatives. Top Federal Prosecutor Jesse Laslovich, a sophomore at the University of Montana at the time, took the Montana House by storm. He has gained the respect of colleagues on both sides of the aisle, even being called a rising star and titles such as “governor” or “senator.” Taking these compliments into heart, U.S. Attorney Laslovich later joined the Montana State Senate in 2005.

Montana State Senate

Becoming a member of the Montana State Senate, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich represented the 43rd District, specifically the counties of Anaconda-Deer Lodge, Granite, and Powell, for approximately six years, until his resignation in 2010. Within his years of membership in the Senate, Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich has provided his services in four committees: the Highways and Transportation Committee; the Judiciary Committee; the Local Government Committee; and the Rules Committee. In addition, U.S. Attorney Laslovich has chaired the Senate Judiciary and Ethics Committees during his term.

Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Elections & Montana Attorney General Election

Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich previously ran for State Auditor of Montana in the 2016 election. He was unopposed in the June 7 Democratic primary nomination but, unfortunately, was defeated in the general election on November 8, 2016. He competed against Republican candidate current U.S. Representative Matthew Rosendale, who also ran unopposed in his party’s primary. In addition to running for Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich was also a candidate for Attorney General in the 2012 Montana Attorney General Election; however, he lost by a minimal margin in the Democratic primary election on June 5, 2012. Montana Department Labor Attorney Pam Bucy won the Montana Attorney General Democratic Primary but lost in the general election on November 6, 2012.

Legal Career

Office of the Attorney General of Montana

In 2007, following his graduation from the University Montana School of Law, Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich joined the Office of the Attorney General of Montana as an Assistant Attorney General under then-Attorney General for Montana and current Chief Justice of Montana Mike McGrath. This marked the beginning of his career as a lawyer. U.S. Attorney Laslovich served as the office’s lead consumer protection attorney for a year. His responsibilities in the Montana Department of Justice include performing highly complex legal work, particularly those concerning contracts, general services, grants, and state purchasing. In addition, the work of U.S. Attorney Laslovich during his employment in the Attorney General’s Office also involved coordinating with other state agencies. He also drafted and monitored legal documents, researched law rules and regulations, provided legal advice, and evaluated and offered legal opinions.

Office of the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance & U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana

U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich resigned from the Montana State Senate on February 10, 2010, to become Chief Legal Counsel for State Auditor Monica Lindeen. For about six years, U.S. Attorney Laslovich remained committed to prosecuting securities fraud cases in the Office of the Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance. From 2010 through 2016, U.S. Attorney Laslovich focused on protecting insurance customers and securities investors, specifically, those involved in prosecuting criminal court cases in line with fraud. As such, Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich was tasked to represent the agency through drafting legislation, conducting administrative actions, and supervising investigations into criminal matters. On top of his career as a Chief Legal Counsel, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich managed a position in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Montana, serving as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney managing securities cases.

Professional Career – SCL Health

Prior to returning to the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Montana, U.S. Attorney Laslovich served as Regional Vice President for the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) Health Montana-Wyoming region – a nonprofit healthcare organization based on faith and is dedicated to improving the health of the people and community, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

Nonprofit Organizations

Through his years of experience as a lawmaker and a law enforcement official, Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich developed good judgment, temperament, and perspective in serving the public. He is an attorney with an accomplished prosecution record defending Montana families and is also a man known to help his community. During his career, U.S. Attorney Laslovich has taken the time to volunteer in several nonprofit organizations, including Aware, whose mission is to provide quality, community-based support for individuals and families who suffer from mental health and/or developmental disabilities. U.S. Attorney Laslovich served as the organization’s Board Chair and on Aware’s Board of Directors. His contributions to the nonprofit organization include aiding in the long-term planning efforts and leading the growth and diversification of the board’s reach throughout the State of Montana. Apart from offering his services to Aware, Top Federal Prosecutor Laslovich has volunteered in ExplorationWorks – a children’s museum that promotes the sciences to children. He has also served on the Professionalism Committee for the State Bar of Montana.

Office Jurisdiction

The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Montana has a mission to serve and protect the citizens of the district through the impartial enforcement of the laws of the United States. As the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official for the District of Montana, U.S. Attorney Jesse A. Laslovich is responsible for leading the office and its staff in conducting federal criminal prosecutions within the State of Montana. Assistant U.S. Attorneys under the Criminal Division of the Office is tasked to prosecute a diverse workload, with emphasis on matters involving child pornography, complex drug, and money laundering activities, computer fraud, environmental crime, financial institution fraud, cases involving multiple defendants and criminal enterprises, organized crime, public corruption, and violent crimes, among other cases. Ultimately, U.S. Attorney Jesse Laslovich shall oversee the investigations of criminal cases and eventually decide on the appropriateness of bringing criminal charges and initiating prosecution. Not only does the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Montana handle criminal prosecution, but it also represents the interests of the United States and its agencies in civil litigation in which the United States is a party.
