John Cummings Anderson is the incumbent United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico. Presidential Nominee under President Donald Trump, Attorney Anderson, was nominated on November 1, 2017, and was unanimously confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on February 15, 2018. He took the oath of office on February 23, 2018, administered by the Chief Judge William P. Johnson of the United States District Court for the District of New Mexico.

Education
Bowdoin College graduate of the Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, John C. Anderson earned his undergraduate degree in 1997. He also spent a year studying abroad, at Queen’s University, from 1995 to 1996. John Anderson received his Juris Doctorate from Fordham Law School, graduating cum laude in 2003. He also went to the County College of Morris in 1999.
Teachings and Early Career
John C. Anderson has traversed the field of teaching before finally getting into law school. He has served as an intern to several institutions such as in the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia in 1998, and in the Bureau of Human Rights and Rule of Law in 2001. John C. Anderson has taught as an LSAT Prep Course Instructor as a part of the Kaplan Test Preparation Company from 1999 to 2000, as a High School teacher of the Morris Catholic High School from 1998 to 2000, and then as a Teaching Assistant for a class on appellate advocacy at the Fordham Law School in 2003. Later in his law career, John Anderson still managed to teach as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law, teaching a course on Advanced Trial Practice.
Legal Career
In the Summer of 2002, John C. Anderson began his legal career as a Law Clerk at the Simpson Thacher & Barlett LLP. In September of the following year, he served as a Law Clerk under the Honorable Paul J. Kelly Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Working for a federal appellate judge, Atty Anderson was tasked to investigate and analyze legal matters in support of judicial opinions. He also often assisted the judge in preparing for oral arguments.
Following his clerkship under the Honorable Paul J. Kelly Jr. in 2004, John C. Anderson decided to return to the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP as a Litigation Associate. For four years, he worked in private practice focusing on commercial litigation and representing corporate clients in governmental and administrative investigations. Furthermore, John C. Anderson has worked with the Department of Justice and the Securities & Exchange Commission and has also worked on compliance matters relating to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
The service of John C. Anderson to the District of New Mexico began in 2008 when he became an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico. As an active federal criminal prosecutor, U.S. Attorney Anderson has handled several cases involving criminal investigation cases, narcotics, and subsequently focusing on white-collar crimes.
Prior to being sworn into office at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico as the Chief Federal Prosecutor, John Anderson joined the Holland & Hart LLP as a Chief of Counsel where his line of work focused on civil cases, including contract and tort cases, export control laws, white-collar crimes, and trade sanctions; however, John C. Anderson has managed to remain active in criminal prosecution, doing pro bono work in representing indigent criminal defendants. He has maintained his vigor in the criminal litigation field through his membership at the Federal Criminal Justice Act panel.
Bar and Court Admissions
John C. Anderson is also an active member of several Bar Associations such as the State Bar of New Mexico since 2013, and the State Bar of New York since 2005. In addition, he was admitted to the State Bar of New Jersey in 2004. Moreover, John Anderson has had several Court Admissions, including admissions at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth and Tenth Circuit since 2014 and 2004, respectively, and the U.S. District Courts of New Mexico and Southern District of New York since 2008 and 2005, respectively. Atty Anderson was also formerly admitted to Pueblo of Zuni, Tribal Court, from 2016 to 2017.
Some Important Litigated Matters
Previously working with the Pueblo of Zuni, John Anderson was sole counsel in a two-day criminal jury trial, which resulted in the indicting of the defendant for kidnapping, aggravated weapons offenses, and making terroristic attacks. The defendant was, subsequently, sentenced to the maximum term of 18-month imprisonment.

In 1997, he received a Departmental Honors in Philosophy from Bowdoin College. Moreover, he has earned various honors from the Fordham Law School, including being a Joseph Crowley Scholar in International Human Rights Law in 2002, receiving the Archibald Murray Award for Outstanding Commitment to Public Service and the Order of the Coif in 2003, and being the Notes & Articles Editor of the Fordham Law Review from 2002 to 2003. John C. Anderson has also been given Certificates of Appreciation and Recognition from the United States Secret Service, Internal Revenue Service, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2012, 2013, and 2013.
Office Jurisdiction
United States Attorney for the District of New Mexico, John C. Anderson, currently oversees 33 counties and handles investigations and litigations of criminal matters, appeals to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and other affirmative civil actions.
