John Durham states attorney for the district of Connecticut

John Henry Durham is the 52nd U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut for the U.S. Department of Justice. John H. Durham is an American lawyer. As a federal prosecutor, he has earned a reputation of unbiased judgment against corruption.

Durham’s nomination was made by the U.S. President, Donald Trump on November 1, 2017. The U.S. Senate confirmed Durham’s nomination through a voice vote, on February 16, 2018. He swore as the chief federal law enforcement officer of the district on February 22, 2018. He was sworn in New Haven by the Chief United States District Judge Janet C. Hall.

Durham served the post earlier as an interim United States Attorney. He served this post since October 28, 2017.  As the U.S. Attorney of the district, he will be the principal litigator for the District of Connecticut and defend the civil actions and the tax affairs of the government. The position was earlier held by Deirdre M. Daly.

  

Law Career

After graduation, John H. Durham, for two years, worked as a VISTA volunteer. He worked there from 1975 to 1977. He also was the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana.

After this, he went to Connecticut to become a state prosecutor. During his career, he was also an Instructor, Criminal Justice Department at the University of New Haven.

John H. Durham has been associated as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for 35 years in various positions in the District of Connecticut. In the year 1977 and 1978, Durham was the Deputy Assistant State’s Attorney in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney. He served as an Assistant State’s Attorney from the year 1978 to 1982 at the New Haven State’s Attorney’s Office. The office was at that time led by Arnold Markle.

He was next appointed as the attorney and afterwards a supervisor of the Justice Department’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Section of Boston Strike Force, New Haven Field Office from the year 1982 to 1989. In 1997 and 1998, Durham served as the United States Attorney as an acting and interim authority.

 

John H. Durham as a Special Attorney at the District of Massachusetts

John H. Durham was Deputy U.S. Attorney from the year 1994 to 2008. During the year 1998 to 2008, he headed the Justice Task Force, and he was chosen as a Special Attorney at the District of Massachusetts. He worked up for the inquiry into accusations of FBI agents and Boston police having allied with the mob boss, James “Whitey Bulger” and Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi, which led to the prosecution of one Ex-state Police Lieutenant along with an Ex-FBI Supervisory Special Agent. He was involved in the investigation by then-Attorney General Janet Reno in the year 1999.

From the year 2008 to 2012, he headed the Eastern District of Virginia as the acting United States Attorney. His famous stint was his prosecution role in the investigation and destruction of CIA interrogation tapes in the year 2010. In the year 2012, he shut down the torture investigation.

For nearly a decade he was the Counsel to the U.S. Attorney. He has served this post from the year 2008 to 2017. As the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, John H. Durham focused his tenure on complex and violent crimes, public corruption, and financial fraud.

John H. Durham was employed as a lecturer at the Connecticut Bar Association. What is more, Mr. Durham has also worked as a Moot Court Judge at the Yale School of Law.

John H. Durham was featured on The New Republic in the list of most powerful, least famous people in Washington in November 2011.
