John R. Lausch, Jr.
John R. Lausch, Jr. is the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois for the United States Department of Justice. He is a Chicago based lawyer.
Mr. Lausch’s nomination was announced by August 3, 2017. The United States Senate approved his nomination through a voice vote on October 19, 2017. He got the confirmation for the post by the Senate on November 9, 2017, through a voice vote. He swore in as the chief federal law enforcement officer of the Northern District of Illinois on November 22, 2017. The post was earlier served by Zachary T. Fardon.

Primary Duties
As the U.S. Attorney, Mr. Lausch is serving his four-year term for the district that has around 9 million people. He serves as the principal litigator for the Northern District of Illinois, which has two divisions, Eastern Division (Chicago) and Western Division (Rockford). It has 18 counties in which the Eastern Division includes counties Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Lake, Kane, Kendall, La Salle, and Will. The Western Division includes Boone, Carroll, DeKalb, JoDaviess, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside, and Winnebago counties.
The office, which has 300 employees that include about 152 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, looks after the prosecution of federal felonies like terrorism, robberies, public corruption, homicides, narcotics, cybercrime, and fraud in the district. Mr. Lausch is the chief federal law enforcement officer and defends civil cases and the tax affairs of the Government.
Law Career and Private Practice
John R. Lausch, Jr., during his early law career, served as a Law Clerk at the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit for Judge Michael Stephen Kanne.
Prior to getting appointed as the U.S. Attorney, he was into private practice. From 2010, he practiced law primarily in Chicago.
Association with United States Attorney Office
U.S. Attorney Lausch joined the United States Attorney Office in the year 1999. He was appointed as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois in the year 1999. He served the post from 1999 to 2010. His first cases included extortion, narcotics, fraud, and racketeering. He has appeared for several cases for the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
He was the Deputy Chief in the Narcotics & Gangs Section from the year 2005 to 2010. During his service, he administered criminal prosecutions related to street gangs, scams, and corruption in public officers. He also assisted the office’s Violent Crime Section as a Coordinator. He also led the programs Anti-Gang and Project Safe Neighborhoods of the District.
Education
John R. Lausch, Jr. joined the Harvard University for his undergraduate degree. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in General Studies (Government Concentration) in the year 1992. Mr. Lausch earned his Juris Doctor from the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law in the year 1996.
Awards
John R. Lausch, Jr. has received both his bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees cum laude. Mr. Lausch, during his time in Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, was selected to the Order of the Coif.
He is the recipient of the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance two times. He was honored with the award for his contribution during his tenure as the Assistant United States Attorney.
