Jonathan F. Lenzner
A new Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer is welcomed to the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland. Jonathan F. Lenzner is appointed as the new Acting United States Attorney by virtue of the Vacancies Reform Act, following the stepping down of former U.S. Attorney Robert K. Hur, whose resignation was announced on February 3, 2021. Jonathan Lenzner will officially take over in the Office on February 15, 2021. He shall remain in the position for 300 days or until President-elect Joe Biden appoints a new U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.

Educational Background and Teachings
U.S. Attorney Lenzner is a graduate of trinity College-Hartford, wherein he was President of the Senior Class and was active in the sports football and lacrosse. Lenzner earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government in 1996. He then attended law school at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law – Yeshiva University in 2001 and subsequently received his Juris Doctorate in 2004. As a graduate of the Cardozo School of Law, United States Attorney Lenzner served as a member of the Cardozo’s Board of Overseers and, on numerous instances, has taught trial advocacy to the Cardozo law students.
Political Career
As a dedicated public servant, U.S. Attorney Lenzner has had a series of outstanding achievements throughout his career. His professional career began in 1997 when he joined the Office of the United States Representative Sam Gejdenson, D-CT-02. Jonathan Lenzner served in the Office as a Press Secretary for two years, until 1999. In July of the same year, he joined the Presidential Candidate Bill Bradley campaign team as Director of the National Press Advance. For nine months, U.S. Attorney Lenzner was in charge of building relationships with the press and communicating with the media as the key spokesperson, being the pro-active thinker and strategist of the team. Prior to entering law school, U.S. Attorney Lenzner joined the Kaufman Campaign Consultants as a Communications Director and served in the position for a year.
State Bar Admissions
After receiving his doctoral degree in law, U.S. Attorney Jonathan Lenzner launched his legal career and was granted admission to practice law in the State of New York in 2005. Up to this day, U.S. Attorney Lenzner remains an active member of the New York State Bar Association. Just recently, he also became a District of Columbia Bar member after being granted admission in 2016.
Legal Career
For about six years, from September of 2004 to August of 2010, U.S. Attorney Lenzner became Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He provided exceptional service and performed duties in the different units of the Criminal Division of the Office of the District Attorney for the New York County, including the Major Economic Crimes Division, the Trial Division, and the Sex Crimes Unit of the Office.
Joining the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland for the first time in September of 2010, Jonathan Lenzner served in the Office as an Assistant United States Attorney for almost three years. In this capacity, he was responsible for prosecuting various federal crimes, including cases involving financial crimes, illegal firearms, narcotics, public corruption, sex, labor trafficking, and violent gangs, among other white-collar crimes.
In March of 2013, U.S. Attorney Lenzner left the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland and took the helm at the IGI/The Lenzner Firm – a global risk advisory, crisis management, and corporate investigations company, which has been founded in 1984 by former Senate Watergate Committee counsel and father of U.S. Attorney Jonathan Lenzner, Terry F. Lenzner. The United States Attorney Lenzner ran the firm for five and a half years until August of 2018.
Returning to the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland as the First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Robert Hur in 2018, Jonathan Lenzner became a part of the Office once more and has made numerous accomplishments as second in command in the Office. Acting U.S. Attorney Lenzner has prosecuted a number of high-profile cases, including those that involved fraud, national security matters, public corruption, domestic and international terrorist threats, and has fully committed to the combat against violent crimes. For over two and a half years, U.S. Attorney Jonathan Lenzner has dedicated his time to serving the District of Maryland – overseeing the daily operations of the criminal, civil, and administrative divisions of the U.S. Attorney’s Office while performing duties as the chief deputy to former U.S. Attorney Hur. Moreover, as second in command, U.S. Attorney Lenzner provided assistance in developing and implementing new initiatives that are made to ensure the Office can maximize its resources and generally be more efficient in handling prosecutions. This includes the founding of an in-house unit comprised of investigative analysts and an improved system of strategic planning.

The areas of practice where U.S. Attorney Jonathan Lenzner is proficient in include civil litigation, criminal law and defense, financial investigation, white-collar prosecution, and criminal defense, court prosecutions, and securities litigation. Furthermore, he shows expertise in legal research, legal writing, class actions, Westlaw, and trial practice.
Office Jurisdiction
Being the incumbent United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Jonathan F. Lenzner bears the responsibility of overseeing a staff of nearly 100 outstanding Assistant U.S. Attorneys, as well as approximately 75 committed support personnel. As Chief Federal Law Enforcement Official, Lenzner is also in charge of managing and overseeing all criminal and civil investigations and prosecutions brought in the district on behalf of the United States. The Office handles a high volume of cases, including prosecutions involving civil rights violations, cybercrime, domestic and international terrorism, financial fraud, gang violence, healthcare fraud, narcotics trafficking, organized crime, and public corruption, among many others.
