Joseph P. Kelly
Republican Joseph Patrick Kelly, incumbent United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska, was nominated by President Donald Trump, and was received by the Senate and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary on December 1, 2017. The nomination was unanimously confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on February 15, 2018. Joseph P. Kelly succeeded Acting United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska Robert Stuart on February 23, 2018, as he was sworn into office.

Endorsements for Nomination
Prior to Joseph Kelly, former U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg served during President Barack Obama’s two terms in office. When Joseph Patrick Kelly was nominated for the position, Atty Gilg said he “will seamlessly transition into that position.” Along with Deborah Gilg, Joseph P. Kelly also received support from a number of law enforcers, including United States Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse, Professor Carl Tobias, and Governor Pete Ricketts, who all commended Atty Kelly for his outstanding service as a public servant.
Education and Legal Career
Joseph P. Kelly received his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska, and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Nebraska School of Law in 1981. His legal career began with his service to the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office as a Deputy County Attorney from 1981 to 1986, where he worked closely with law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute criminal cases.
Joining private practice, Joseph Kelly became an Associate at the Berniger, Berg, and Diver PC in Colorado Springs. From 1987 to 1990, Joseph P. Kelly gained even more substantive experience in the legal field, prosecuting numerous criminal cases, including sexual assault, homicide, robbery, and white-collar crimes. Later on, he returned to the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office also as a Deputy County Attorney. He continued serving there for 11 years from 2000 to 2011.
In 2011, Joseph Patrick Kelly was elected to be the Lancaster County Attorney, which he remained in position from 2011 to 2018, prior to being appointed as United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska. In this capacity, Joseph Kelly was responsible for managing and supervising the prosecutorial function in the county. Furthermore, he has worked on civil suits, including working on contracts, providing legal assistance, among others.
Some of His Litigated Matters
As the United States Attorney for the District of Nebraska, Joseph Patrick Kelly has worked on numerous federal prosecutions, including the litigation of “AK Bandit” on June 5, 2019. Convicted for bank robbery, brandishing a firearm, and carjacking, Richard L. Gathercole was sentenced to 35 years in prison by Senior United States District Judge Richard G. Kopf. Additionally, Mr. Gathercole was ordered to serve five years of pay restitution in the amount of $392,392.06, and a federal supervised release.
Office Jurisdiction and Mission
The Office of the United States Attorney led by Joseph P. Kelly, work with a variety of federal law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Social Security Administration, Department of Health and Human Services, among other agencies to maintain peace and bring justice to the district. Moreover, the office has a mission to ensure public safety against threats, whether foreign or domestic. It also aims to defend the United States in both civil and criminal litigations and recover debts owed to the United States.
