Kenji Price states attorney for the district of Hawaii

Kenji M. Price is the U.S. Attorney for the District of Hawaii for the United States Department of Justice. He is an American attorney whose practice intensively includes white-collar criminal defense and commercial litigations.

Price’s nomination was announced by the U.S. President, Donald Trump on February 16, 2018. The United States Senate confirmed Price’s nomination through a unanimous voice vote, on April 26, 2018. He swore for the post on May 1, 2018. As the chief federal law enforcement officer of the District of Hawaii, he is currently serving his four-year term.

Kenji Price was serving the post as the Interim U.S. Attorney from January 5, 2018, to May 1, 2018. The position was earlier held by Florence T. Nakakuni.

Law Career

U.S. Attorney Kenji M. Price served as a Law Clerk at the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit for Judge Kent A. Jordan. Price clerked for him from August 2011 to August 2012. From August 2010 to August 2011, he was a Law Clerk for Judge Robert B. Kugler at the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

Private Practice

Before taking over the post of U.S. Attorney of the District of Hawaii, Price was the director at one of the largest firms in Hawaii, Alston Hunt Floyd & Ing. He was associated with the firm from October 2017 to January 2018.

Kenji Price has worked as a partner at the law firm Carlsmith Ball, Honolulu from July 2017 to September 2017. Price was Of Counsel at Carlsmith Ball LLP from September 2015 to July 2017.

Price was a Summer associate at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP from May 2009 to Aug 2009. He was also a summer associate for the firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati from May 2008 to August 2008.

Association with USAO

Price served as the Assistant United States Attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice in the Eastern District of New York from September 2012 to September 2015. At this post, he oversaw the prosecution of several felonies like drug trafficking, vehement crimes, and thefts.

Primary Duties

Kenji Marcel Price serves as the principal litigator for the District of Hawaii, which is primarily divided into three divisions, Criminal, Civil, and Administrative. The office has 26 Assistant United States Attorneys and around 40 support staff members, who together oversee the prosecution of federal felonies like terrorism, public corruption, drug trafficking, and fraud in the district.

The Criminal Division, which is further divided into two subdivisions, the Violent Crime and Drug Section and the Political Corruption and Fraud Section, has 20 AUSAs. The Civil Division has five attorneys and 40 support staff. The Administrative Division is managed by all the staff collectively. Price as the chief federal law enforcement officer defends the civil cases and the tax affairs of the Government. The USAO also collects debts owed to the Federal Government.

Association with Military

Attorney Price was an officer in the United States Army. During his nearly four years of tenure in the Army, he was an infantry officer for one year, from 2002 to 2003. He served as a Rifle Platoon Leader for the 173rd Airborne Brigade from March 2003 to March 2004. In the 75th Ranger Regiment, Kenji Price was a Ranger Platoon Leader from April 2004 to March 2005 and Company Executive Officer between March 2005 to January 2006.

Education

Kenji M. Price joined Gonzaga University for his undergraduate degree in the year 1998. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from there in 2002. Price earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in the year 2010. Between 2009 to 2010, he was the Editor in Chief of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
