Kurt G. Alme Montana States Attorney

Chief Federal Prosecutor for the District of Montana, Kurt G. Alme, was announced as a part of the Second Wave of United States Attorney Candidate Nominations by President Donald Trump on June 29, 2017. U.S. Attorney Alme was recommended by Senators Steve Daines and Jon Tester, along with several other law enforcement officers. Following the nomination of Kurt G. Alme, he was unanimously confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on September 14, 2017, and subsequently officially appointed into office on September 14, 2017.

Education and Honors

Earning his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science in Business, Kurt G. Alme graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Colorado in 1989. He received his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School, graduating Cum Laude, and a Harry S. Truman scholar in 1992.

Legal Career

To begin his legal career, Kurt Alme served at the United States District Court as a Law Clerk under the Honorable Charles C. Lovell from 1992 to 1994. After this, he went into private practice, joining the Crowley, Haughey, Hanson, Toole & Dietrich, now known as Crowley Fleck LLP, as an Associate in 1994, and eventually becoming Partner until 2000. In this capacity, Atty Alme’s focus was on non-profit law, tax law, and business and estate planning.

Following his five-year service at the Crowley Fleck LLP, Kurt G. Alme began his service to the District of Montana as a Director at the Montana Department of Revenue. For two years, from 2001 to 2003, Kurt Alme oversaw all the major civil suits and legal matters of the department. He managed and supervised the operational aspects of the different divisions in the department, handling the taxes on citizens and businesses.

In 2003, Kurt G. Alme became Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Montana. He remained in this position for three years until 2006 when he became First Assistant United States Attorney. Prior to becoming U.S. Attorney, Kurt G. Alme left the United States Attorney’s Office to serve the Yellowstone Boys and Girls Ranch Foundation as an Executive Vice President and General Counsel in 2010. Three years later, Kurt Alme was named President, and served in the position for four years, until 2017. The foundation provides tax and charitable planning and supports the treatment of youth suffering from mental health and substance abuse issues.

Office Mission

A man of substantive experience in federal law enforcement, Kurt Alme is the incumbent United States Attorney for the District of Montana. Upon appointment, he was expected to curb and control the growing issue with substance abuse, specifically meth. The office has focused on bridging the jurisdiction gap between the federal, state, local, and tribal officers. Moreover, the office oversees a wide range of criminal activities and civil litigations, defending the government in cases filed against the United States.

In 2019, Kurt G. Alme was reported to have recovered funds amounting to $9,536,489, collected from criminal and civil actions in the Fiscal Year 2019. These came from civil litigations, such as the case involving Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital, which was prosecuted for fraudulent billings. The law requires restitution payments from the defendants to the victims. The funds are said to be distributed to federal and state victim compensation and assistance programs.

Office Jurisdiction

As the top federal law enforcer of the District of Montana, Kurt Alme is responsible for the largest geographical federal court district in the lower 48 states. The office’s mission, as stated, is “to protect and serve the citizens of the District of Montana through the ethical, vigorous, and impartial enforcement of the laws of the United States.”
