Kurt Robert Erskine states attorney northern district of Georgia

By virtue of the Vacancies Reform Act, Kurt R. Erskine will fill in the position of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, following the stepping down of former Acting U.S. Attorney Bobby L. Christine, who remains as the presidentially appointed Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer for the Southern District of Georgia. The changes in the Office shall be made official and effective on February 1, 2021; moreover, U.S. Attorney Erskine shall remain in the position for 300 days, or until such time that a presidential nominee is confirmed into the seat by the Senate, whichever comes first.

 

Education

A graduate of The College of William and Mary, U.S. Attorney Erskine received his degree in Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy in 1992. He subsequently earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1996, where during the course of him studying law, U.S. Attorney Erskine was also working to receive a Master’s Degree in Health Administration from the University of Kansas Medical Center, graduating around the same time he earned his J.D., in 1996.

 

Legal Career

Acting U.S. Attorney Erskine has a depth and breadth of knowledge and experience in the legal field. The legal career of Kurt Erskine began in 1996, when he joined the Baird Holm LLP as an Associate, serving in the position for two years until 1998. In this capacity, he provided expert counsel in a wide range of practice areas, including banking, business, corporate transactions, finance, government relations & lobbying, health care, intellectual property, and international services. In May of 1998, U.S. Attorney Erskine moved to join the Alston & Bird LLP as an Associate responsible for representing clients in complex litigation and criminal health care cases. Moreover, he provided legal advice to clients on matters involving corporate compliance issues, contracting, corporate development and organization, federal and state regulatory compliance, medical records retention, a medical staff of governance and discipline, and Medicare and Medicaid billing. He remained in the position for three and a half years, serving until October of 2001.

Shifting to public service, U.S. Attorney Erskine first joined the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida in September 2001, working as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Appellate, Major Crimes, and Economic Crimes Sections of the Office. For over three years, from 2001 to 2004, U.S. Attorney Kurt Robert Erskine prosecuted a wide variety of cases, including banking and securities fraud, child exploitation, health care fraud, narcotics trafficking, violent crimes, and other white-collar criminal cases. Later on, U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine moved to join the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, where he initially served as an Assistant United States Attorney. Apart from being responsible for investigating and prosecuting white-collar crimes, U.S. Attorney Erskine was also involved in prosecutions of a number of federal laws, such as the Anti-kickback statute, the Anti-money-laundering laws, the False Claims Act, the Mail Fraud statute, and the Wire Fraud statute. The United States Attorney Erskine served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia for almost seven years, from November of 2004 to August of 2011, until he was promoted as the Deputy Chief of the Economic Crimes Section of the Office.

Ending his first decade of service in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia as a Deputy Chief in the Economic Crimes Section of the Office, U.S. Attorney Erskine supervised the prosecution of criminal health care and computer crime cases within the district, as well as assisted in the supervision and management of the Economics Crimes Section of the Office. In addition, he served as a coordinator and focal point of information between the Office of the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia and various federal and state investigative agencies, particularly with regards to matters involving criminal health care and computer criminal cases.

Later on, United States Attorney Kurt Erskine switched to private practice and joined the Greenburg Traurig, LLP in the Greater Atlanta Area. He was a shareholder in the government investigations group. He spent about eight months in the law firm, expanding experience, particularly in defense of complex white-collar criminal cases and prosecutions of cases involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

In March of 2012, U.S. Attorney Erskine came back into the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia as a Chief of the Public Corruption Section, where he was responsible for supervising, as well as prosecuting complex white-collar cases, corruption, and federal bribery within the district. He served in the capacity for approximately six years until January 2018, holding the position alongside being appointed as the First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Byung J. Pak, who resigned earlier this year. Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine was appointed as second in command in the Office beginning in August of 2015. He began serving as a member of the senior executive team. In addition to his duties as the Chief of the Public Corruption Section in the Criminal Division of the Office, U.S. Attorney Erskine supervised the Criminal, Civil, Appellate, and Administrative Divisions of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia.

 

Office Jurisdiction

Acting United States Attorney Kurt Erskine is an experienced federal prosecutor with exemplary skills in different areas of practice, including appeals, complex white-collar prosecutions, corruption cases, False Claims Act litigations, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act cases, fraud prosecutions, health care fraud work, and trial practice. As the Chief Federal Law Enforcement Officer of the Northern District of Georgia, Kurt Erskine is responsible for overseeing the 90 attorneys and over 110 support personnel. On top of that, U.S. Attorney Erskine shall serve the six million citizens of the district and extend the Office’s work well beyond the Northern District of Georgia as several cases in the Office require collaboration and partnership among law enforcement agencies both nationwide and internationally. The Office of the United States Attorney, as led by now Acting U.S. Attorney Kurt Erskine, is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics, among others. In addition, the Office shall also be responsible for managing civil cases involving the United States and recovering debts owed to the United States.
