Legal Career

Prior to becoming the Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming, L. Robert Murray has served as First Assistant United States Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Mark Klaassen, who was appointed by then-President Donald Trump in July of 2017 and sworn-in on November 21, 2017, subsequent to the confirmation of the Senate on November 9, 2017. As the second-in-command in the Office of the United States for the District of Wyoming, U.S. Attorney Murray oversaw the daily operations of the Criminal, Civil, and Administrative Divisions of the Office.

With the efficient and robust partnership of former U.S. Attorney Klaassen and now Acting U.S. Attorney Murray, the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Wyoming has seen substantial changes, including the refocused efforts on violent crime prosecutions such as regarding firearm offenses. Furthermore, the Office fully committed to reinvigorating the ongoing Project Safe Neighborhoods program within the district by leading an inter-agency effort to form a cooperative arrangement with local and state law enforcement agency partners. Through this collaboration, the Office will identify and aggressively target the most violent offenders within the communities.

Apart from violent crime reduction, the Office was able to prioritize and focus on the combat against significant drug crimes, which resulted in the prosecution of one of the largest single drug interdictions in the history of the District of Wyoming. Besides, the partnership of former U.S. Attorney Klaassen and Acting U.S. Attorney Murray emphasized the prosecution of child exploitation offenses, paying more attention to cases that involve the abuse and exploitation of children to produce images of pornography.  Through the consistent efforts of the prosecutors and in collaboration with law enforcement entities, the Office was able to bring emphasis on this area of prosecution, which led to the rescue of about 16 victims of child pornography and child abuse in the year 2020 alone.

Former United States Attorney Mark Klaassen expressed his faith in the hardworking team and staff of the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming. Former U.S. Attorney Klaassen also added that he believes the Office will continue to uphold the high standards of competence, fairness, and respect for the rule of law that has been passed onto him when he first took over in the Office.

L. Robert Murray has faithfully served in the Office of the United States Attorney as Assistant U.S. Attorney before becoming First Assistant U.S. Attorney to former U.S. Attorney Klaassen. He has also previously represented the State of Wyoming in several trials as specially appointed Deputy County Attorney.
