Marc L. Krickbaum State's Attorney Southern District of Iowa

United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, Marc L. Krickbaum, is the 54th U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa. After being nominated by President Donald Trump on July 14, 2017, and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on September 14, 2017, Attorney Krickbaum took his oath of office on October 2, 2017.

 

Educational Background

Marc L. Krickbaum has a low-key demeanor with a wealth of experience, who has earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Political Science at the University of Iowa, graduating with the highest distinction in 2001. Subsequently, he has received his Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude in 2006.

 

Legal Career

Focusing on “bread and butter cases” that actually affect people in the community, Marc L. Krickbaum began his legal career in 2006 as a Summer Associate at the Mayer Brown LLP, and then as a judicial law clerk at the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, under the Honorable Steven M. Colloton, conducting legal research, along with drafting judicial opinions. In 2007, Mr. Krickbaum moved to Chicago and practiced law under the Honorable Mark Filip as a judicial law clerk at the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

In 2008, Mr. Krickbaum began working on policy issues relating to criminal law and national security. He served as the Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice, Office of the Deputy Attorney General, from 2008 to 2009. Later in the year 2009, Mr. Krickbaum held civil cases and drafted pleadings for cases involving the statute or Executive action, serving as the trial attorney for the Federal Programs Branch at the United States Department of Justice, Civil Division, where he previously worked as an appellate staff and intern, in 2004.

Following his employment at the United States Department of Justice, Mr. Krickbaum served as the Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois from 2009 to 2013. He also served a year as an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa from 2013 to 2014, until he was promoted to Deputy Chief of Appeals from 2014 to 2015, and subsequently, as the Chief of Appeals from 2015 to 2016. Later in the Spring of 2016, he again became an Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Krickbaum’s work involved the prosecution of offenses, including public corruption, theft of trade secrets, drug, and gun trafficking, Hobbs Act robbery, bank robbery, counterfeiting, and immigration, among other criminal cases. He has also led grand jury investigations.

 

Most Significant Litigated Matters

In 2016, Mr. Krickbaum lost in a murder trial involving a 14-year-old girl who shot and killed another 14-year-old girl, with a loaded gun supplied by her uncle. After a seven-day jury trial, the verdict was not guilty; however, Mr. Krickbaum remained proud to have taken the case, as this demonstrated the philosophy that has guided his career as a prosecutor. Moreover, he has prosecuted a case involving $37 million consumer fraud in 2010.

 

Honors and Awards

Over the years, Mr. Krickbaum has lead and co-lead in prosecuting several cases involving firearms, fraud, child exploitation, counterterrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, and human trafficking. He has received several acknowledgments for his work, such as the Attorney General’s Honors Program in 2008, the FBI Appreciation Award and the Chicago Crime Commission Excellence in Law Enforcement Award in 2012, the Chicago Crime Commission Award for Combatting Illegal Weapons in 2014, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture-OIG Appreciation Award in 2015.

 

Bar and Court Admission, and Teachings

Attorney Krickbaum has been admitted to practice at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, in 2007, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa in 2013. He also has had informal membership at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Furthermore, Mr. Krickbaum is an active member of the State Bar of Illinois and has formerly been a member of the charitable organization Connexus Association in 2017, and the Central Iowa Working Group on Human Trafficking from 2014 to 2016. He was also a Mock Trial Instructor at Lawndale Middle School from 2012 to 2013, and Meredith Middle School in 2014.

 

Office Jurisdiction

Currently, Marc L. Krickbaum oversees about 50 employees, including 20 attorneys, whose jurisdiction covers 47 counties in Iowa. Belonging to the Register’s People to Watch in 2018, Atty Krickbaum is the top federal prosecutor in the Southern District of Iowa.
