United States Attorney for the District of Wyoming Mark Allen Klaassen was nominated by President Donald Trump on July 21, 2017, and was confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on November 9, 2017. Administered by Federal District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson, Mark A. Klaassen took the oath of office on November 21, 2017, succeeding for U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming Christopher “Kip” Crofts. 

 

Educational Background

Mark Allen Klaassen is a summa cum laude graduate of Oral Roberts University, where he received his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science in Finance. Subsequently, Mark A. Klaassen earned his Juris Doctorate at the University of Notre Dame Law School, graduating magna cum laude in 1998.

 

Legal Career

Straight out of law school, Mark Allen Klaassen began his legal career serving as a Law Clerk at the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, under the Honorable Wade Brorby. A year later, Mark Allen Klaassen started working at Latham & Watkins as an Associate, from 1999 to 2003.

Before he served to the District of Wyoming, Mark A. Klaassen first served at the United States House of Representatives as a General Counsel for the Committee on Homeland Security from 2003 to 2007. U.S. Attorney Klaassen’s tasks as the General Counsel includes being ultimately responsible for all legal matters, as long as overseeing attorneys and regulating police officers. Moreover, he was expected to implement policies, and even representing the Department in different courts, including the United States immigration courts. Mark A. Klaassen served for four years and three months at the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed by former President George W. Bush to formally serve as the Chief of Staff to the General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Atty Klaassen worked at the Department for two years, from 2007 to 2009.

In 2009, Mark Klaassen’s service to the District of Wyoming began as he became the Assistant United States Attorney at the U.S Attorney’s Office – District of Wyoming. Working as a federal prosecutor in the office, Mark Allen Klaassen managed several criminal and civil cases involving affirmative civil cases, as well as financial litigation cases. He has also handled prosecutions of federal crimes related to firearms, drug trafficking, narcotics, and public corruption. U.S. Attorney for the District of Wyoming, Mark Klaassen’s service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Wyoming lasted for almost eight years, before becoming the United States Attorney for the District of Wyoming. In those years, Mark A. Klaassen was elected to become a part of the Board of Trustees at the Laramie County School District Number one.

 

Litigated Matters as U.S. Attorney

As the incumbent United States Attorney for the District of Wyoming, Mark Allen Klaassen is responsible for prosecuting crimes that involved the district. This includes prosecuting federal crimes involving child exploitation, narcotics, and public corruption, among others. After being sworn into office, Mark A. Klaassen mentioned specifically the challenges that the district faces regarding reducing violent crime, the use of illegal drugs, and the abuse of prescription opioids in the community. Atty Klaassen has continually worked in line with the statement to make a difference in the matter, including his recent undertaking, where he worked with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration to settle a civil case, which involved violations of the Controlled Substances Act. The accused Osco pharmacy owned by the Albertsons LLC has agreed to pay one million dollars in order to resolve the allegations tied to the case of illegal prescribing practices of a related physician, which was settled with the conviction of the physician in 2019.

 

Office Jurisdiction

Additionally, the office of the United States Attorney led by Mark Allen Klaassen also manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States. Furthermore, he oversees a staff of 42 employees, including 17 attorneys and 25 support personnel.
