Matthew G.T. Martin states attorney for the Middle district of North Carolina

Matthew G.T. Martin is the current United States Attorney for the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Following his graduation from law school, Martin entered civil practice by acquiring the position of Attorney in the Covington & Burling LLP D.C. office. Two years later, Martin got a job as an Attorney in Smith Anderson, where he surpassed himself and rose to the position of a partner. Martin never saw himself as an in-house counsel, but in 2013, he got a proposition he couldn’t refuse. When he received the offer for the position of Associate General Counsel at Duke Energy, he accepted. Martin worked at the Energy Corp for five years before getting confirmation from the U.S. Senate as the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina.

Major Cases

As a U.S. Attorney, Martin took his role in strides. At the beginning of his term, he set down priorities so he can immediately work on the issues plaguing the Middle District of North Carolina. His set of preferences got documented as ‘reducing violent crimes, attacking exploitation, including exploitation via child pornography, sex, and labor trafficking, and sexual harassment in housing, impacting the opioid crisis, enhancing law enforcement relationships, and addressing fraud on the government.’

Professional Accomplishments

Early in his career, Martin had the opportunity to focus on complex civil litigation. At Smith Anderson, this experience came in handy, where he also worked on technology lawsuits, contract disputes, and intellectual property cases. These diverse cases kept Martin on his toes and also allowed him to network with many cross-sections of attorneys. But it was his job description at Duke Energy Corps that prepared Martin for his current position of Attorney.

While Martin’s career path was dissimilar to that of his current position, he found himself exactly where he wanted to be at last. Martin’s aspirations for this career came from the drive and conviction of helping others. As a U.S. Attorney, Martin finally got the chance to make a bigger impact by prosecuting societal offenders.

Educational Background

Martin did his bachelor’s from the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with honors and highest distinction. He received his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law, where he was the Editor in Chief of the North Carolina Law Review.

Role in the Community

Martin is also very vocal about dignifying work for law enforcement officers and public servants. He believes it is a noble calling to protect and serve the community.

Martin didn’t always want to be a lawyer. Martin chose this career only after seeing the service-minded attorneys in his small mountainous hometown in western North Carolina. The way they supported the local community impressed him. The sound and honest practice of others motivated Martin to pursue a career in Law. His passion for helping others and his hard work attained him a position in a successful law firm, allowed him to supervise litigation in a Fortune 500 corporation, and led him to the position of a U.S. Attorney.
