Nomination and Appointment
Chief federal law enforcement official, Matthew Schneider, was appointed by the United States Attorney General Jeff Sessions on January 5, 2018, and was nominated by President Donald Trump to be the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan on June 20, 2018. The Senate confirmed his nomination by Voice Vote on January 2, 2019. It was, subsequently, sworn into office as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan on January 4, 2019.
Education, Teaching, and Bar Admissions
Graduate of the Michigan State University – James Madison College, Matthew Schneider earned his degree in Bachelor of Arts in International Relations in 1996. Furthermore, he received his Juris Doctorate at the University of Michigan Law School in 2000. Loyal to his alma mater, Mr. Schneider has served several years as an Adjunct Professor at the Michigan University, discussing Federal Investigation and Prosecution. He has also spoken and written about nearly all aspects of constitutional requirements, and federal criminal investigation. Matthew Schneider is an active member of the District of Columbia bar.
Legal Career
According to former interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Daniel L. Lemisch, Matthew Schneider, is “a very accomplished lawyer and a great prosecutor.” Mr. Schneider’s experience in legal matters began in the year 2000, practicing international law as an Attorney at the Wiley Rein LLP. During this time of his career, Matthew Schneider focused on prosecuting legal business and trade matters involving American companies against international governments.
The professional career of Mr. Schneider boosted in 2001 as he became a Senior Advisor and Assistant General Counsel at the White House Office of Management and Budget from 2001 to 2003, under President George W. Bush. His work at the white house involved various legal schemes, including drafting the President’s major policy and budget initiatives, as well as developing the Executive Orders and Signing Statements for the President. He was also an adviser to the President’s Cabinet Members and Senior Policy Makers, helping with the development of the Department of Homeland Security.
In 2003, Matthew Schneider started working as a federal prosecutor, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, at the U.S. Department of Justice in Detroit, serving there for eight years until 2011. He prosecuted cases relating to public corruption, organized crime and violence, and white-collar crimes. Mr. Schneider also accomplished prosecuting numerous cases involving anti-terrorism and garnering the United States Government’s Top Secret, Sensitive Compartmented Information – the highest security clearance in the state.
Mr. Schneider’s service to the State of Michigan began in 2011 when he became Chief of Staff, and General Counsel to Governor Rick Snyder at the Michigan Supreme Court, helping with the administration of the Judicial Branch of the Government of Michigan. Two years later, Matthew Schneider became Chief Legal Counsel to Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette for the State of Michigan, heading the federal bankruptcy case in the City of Detroit.
Some of His Significant Litigated Matters
In 2015, Mr. Schneider was lead counsel to a case representing the State of Michigan in one of the largest and most complicated municipal bankruptcy in the United States history, which resulted in the “Grand Bargain” and the Global Retiree Settlement. Matthew Schneider was able to resolve the case that provided the State of Michigan a total of $816 million in funding to finance its pension obligations.
A year before his appointment as the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Mr. Schneider served a year as the Chief Deputy Attorney General for the State of Michigan, overseeing numerous criminal and civil cases, which totaled to 40,000. He was also responsible for a budget of over $100 million and a staff of approximately 500 personnel.
Honors and Awards
A “person of utmost integrity, high character, and will reflect everything great about Michigan,” Matthew Schneider, as described by Mr. Schuette, has received several awards from federal law enforcement agencies, including the ATF, FBI, and DEA.

United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, Matthew Schneider currently oversees 34 counties and supervises over 245 attorneys and support personnel in Detroit, Bay City, and Flint, Michigan. The office is responsible for defending the United States, and also recovering debts owed to the state. The Office of the U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Michigan is known for successful prosecutions and investigations on litigation matters of all criminal and civil cases such as public corruption, fraud, drug trafficking, terrorism, and environmental crimes.
