McGregor W. Scott is the United States Attorney for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He is a government official and a veteran American lawyer. He has a prosecution experience of around 20 years.

McGregor “Greg” William Scott looks after one of the largest judicial districts of the United States, which includes six large urban areas and 34 counties. Those are Bakersfield, Sacramento, Fairfield, Fresno, Stockton, and Vallejo. He will be supervising the prosecution of federal law violations for the district that stretches from the Oregon state line to the north of Bakersfield. The USAO is also accountable to represent and handle the United States in civil actions, and the tax affairs of the government.

McGregor W. Scott was the appointee of President of United States, Donald J. Trump. After his nomination confirmation in November 2017, he took the oath for the chief federal law officer of the district on December 29, 2017. He got asserted for his four-year term in the USAO by the United States Senate through the voice vote. Prior to him, the position was held by Phillip Talbert.

 

Law Career

During his initial career, McGregor W. Scott has primarily worked as a partner in the law firm of Orrick, Herrington, & Sutcliffe, LLP. During his tenure in their Sacramento office, he worked mostly with white-collar crimes and corporate investigations. His notable cases included the case of Sierra Railroad, which he fought and won against the Patriot Rail Company. McGregor W. Scott left his federal post in the year 2009. He did a commendable job during his tenure when he voluntarily opted to take the case of Jaycee Lee Dugard, without charging any fees.

McGregor W. Scott has served the United States Army Reserve as an infantry officer for 23 years. He got retired from his lieutenant colonel post in the year 2008.

Scott is not new to the post of the United States Attorney. McGregor W. Scott has been reappointed as the Attorney for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California. He has served the post earlier for nearly six years from the year 2003 to 2009, after the nomination received by then-President, George W. Bush. McGregor W. Scott has managed the USAO during the economic meltdown of 2008. He has held the prosecution case of Hamid Hayat and his father, Umer Hayat, in the Lodi terror case. McGregor W. Scott also won the case of settlement against Union Pacific Railroad. It was a historical and whopping $102 million settlement.

He was elected as the District Attorney for Shasta County, California. McGregor W. Scott served his tenure from the year 1997 to 2003. He has also earlier worked in Contra Costa County, California as its deputy district attorney, from the year 1989 to 1997. He has spearheaded the prosecution of the notorious case of Benjamin Matthew Williams and James Tyler Williams, who were siblings.

Scott has even been a part of counsel offering advisory committee for the U.S. Attorneys, General Alberto Gonzales, and his predecessor John Ashcroft. During his long service term, he has been a part of many of the U.S. Department of Justice committees and California District Attorney Associations.

 

Academic Background

McGregor Scott joined the Santa Clara University, Santa Clara, California for his undergraduate course. After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree from there in 1985, he went to the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, to complete his J.D. He completed his Juris Doctor Degree in 1989.
