Michael G. Bailey is the United States Attorney for the District of Arizona, U.S. Department of Justice. Michael Bailey was nominated for the post by the United States President Donald J. Trump, on February 12, 2019. Michael G. Bailey was nominated after a long two-year vacancy since the last permanent appointment for the U.S. attorney post. Bailey was sworn in as the interim U.S. Attorney for Arizona on May 1, 2019. He received pronouncement from Arizona Senator Martha McSally.

Michael G. Bailey was through a unanimous voice vote confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 23, 2019. He assumed office in June 2019. John S. Leonardo preceded him. Leonardo stepped down days before Trump’s swearing-in on January 20, 2017. After confirmation from the U.S. Senate, Bailey gained a four-year term at the top federal law enforcement post in Arizona.

Michael G. Bailey was born and brought up in New York’s Hudson River Valley. It is located on the exterior of New York City. Bailey’s wife, Cynthia Bailey, is a Maricopa County Superior Court Judge.

 

Law Career

During the earlier phase of his law career, Michael Bailey was a litigator in private practice. He practiced as a criminal prosecutor. He also worked as an assistant professor at a liberal arts college.

Michael G. Bailey served as a Maricopa County prosecutor from the year 1998 to 2004, where he handled the prosecution of violent crimes and cases involving vulnerable populations. As a prosecutor in Major Crimes division, he carried out prosecution of dozens of homicide cases and hundreds of sex-crimes cases. In the year 2004, he also ran for Maricopa County Attorney in a crowded Republican primary.

Before he was appointed as the U.S. Attorney, Michael Bailey was the Chief Deputy to Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich for four years. As the Chief Deputy, he managed an office of 475 attorneys involved in a broad field of legal practice. Bailey supervised the Attorney office’s seven divisions, which included five legal divisions, communications, and operations.

Michael G. Bailey has served as the chief deputy and chief of staff since the year 2014.

 

Academic Background

Michael G. Bailey underwent his undergraduate course at the Westmont College, Montecito, California. He graduated from Westmont College in 1987. Bailey obtained his Juris Doctor from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, located in Phoenix, Arizona in 1990. It was formerly called Arizona State University College of Law. Michael G. Bailey was enrolled to practice his law in the State Bar of Arizona on October 26, 1991.
