Michael R. Sherwin
Acting United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Michael Rafi Sherwin, has been appointed to the seat by Attorney General William P. Barr on May 19, 2020. Michael R. Sherwin took after former United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Acting Administrator for the Drug Enforcement Administration, Timothy J. Shea. Michael Sherwin can remain interim U.S. Attorney until December of the year 2020, without the Senate’s approval.

Education and Service at the United States Navy
Michael R. Sherwin earned his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Arts from Ohio State University and subsequently received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame – The Law School. Furthermore, Michael Sherwin listed on active duty service to the United States Navy from 1999 to 2004. For five years, he worked as an intelligence officer serving through vital missions, including being assigned at the Air Wing 1 naval air combat strike missions of the Operations Northern and Southern Watch over Iraq, serving under USS John F. Kennedy, and USS Theodore Roosevelt. In this capacity, he served as an intelligence briefer and lead targeting officer. Michael Sherwin has also been assigned under General Tommy Franks to the J2- intelligence staff, where he led as a senior staff intelligence briefer.
Honors and Awards
With his dedication and exemplary service to the United States Navy, Michael R. Sherwin has been awarded multiple citations, including recognitions for his duties at the Middle East during the Afghanistan Campaign of the Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Iraq Campaign of the Operation Iraqi Freedom. Additionally, he has received the Joint Service Commendation Medal of the Oak Leaf Cluster for his service during Operation Iraqi Freedom in July 2003.
Legal Career
The legal career of Michael Sherwin took flight upon the end of his service at the United States Navy. Joining Kreindler & Kreindler LLP as a career prosecutor, Michael R. Sherwin has worked on numerous litigations, including the settlement of four wrongful death claims in relation to the crash of the United States Navy MH-53E helicopter. A case has been filed against United Technologies Corporation, Sikorsky, and General Electric for the alleged helicopter crash due to dangerous design and defects. The Kreindler & Kreindler LLP specializes in military aircraft accidents. Michael Rafi Sherwin is a former U.S. Navy intelligence officer, has shown his substantive knowledge on the matter while working on the prosecution.
In 2008, Michael R. Sherwin joined the Department of Justice, serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida for 12 years, until 2020. Two years through his service as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Michael Sherwin was appointed to the Narcotics Section, prosecuting Venezuelan and Colombian criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking. During this time, he managed to prosecute, and become lead counsel in the litigation and conviction of a top member of the Medellin Cartel, Sigifredo Maya. The offender mentioned above is known to be a close associate of Carlos Lehder and Pablo Escobar.
Six years later, Michael R. Sherwin became Chief of the Health Care Fraud Section. While prosecuting numerous fraud cases, corruption, and litigation matters involving the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of the Economic Crimes Section, Michael Sherwin put the focus on managing and overseeing the most significant health care strike force of the United States, and leading fraud indictments, trials forfeitures, and asset loss.
Chosen to serve as a special detail in Bagram, Afghanistan for the Department of State, Michael Sherwin was appointed by former Attorney General Eric Holder to assist the Afghanistan Attorney’s General Office in 2011. In this position, he aided in the prosecution of more than 120 primary court terrorism trials. He assisted in 250 appellate cases, prioritizing top-tier al-Qaida and Taliban explosives engineers, terrorism investors and financiers, and suicide-bomb recruiters, presenting them before the distinct Afghan Judicial Tribunal.
Being appointed in 2019 as an Associate Deputy Attorney General for the Deputy General Jeffrey Rosen and Attorney General William Barr, Michael R. Sherwin also had the opportunity to serve at the National Security Section of the Department of Justice, working on litigation cases involving counterintelligence and terrorism cases, specializing on the Chinese investigations. Moreover, he was a part of the Board of Directors. They actively supervised the Rise to Peace’s national and international activities – a research and analysis organization that focuses on preventing terrorism and extremism worldwide.
Office Jurisdiction
As the interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Michael Sherwin oversees both the local and federal prosecutions for the nation’s capital. He oversees a staff of approximately 660 personnel, with 330 Assistant United States Attorneys and 330 support personnel. Additionally, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.
