Nicholas A. Trutanich State's Attorney for the district of Nevada

Presidential nominee, Nicholas Andrew Trutanich, was nominated to become the United States Attorney for the District of Nevada by President Donald Trump, with the support of both the Republican and Democratic Parties, on July 13, 2018, as a part of the 16th wave of United States Attorney Nominees. Attorney Trutanich’s nomination was subsequently confirmed by the Senate by Voice Vote on January 2, 2019.

 

Education

Nicholas Andrew Trutanich earned his undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Science in Managerial Economics from the University of California in 2002 and received his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in 2005.

 

Legal Career

Straight out of law school, Nicholas A. Trutanich began his legal career as a Litigation Associate at an international law firm, Kirkland & Ellis LLP. In this capacity, he worked on several trial cases and did research and investigations on federal crimes and civil prosecutions. Atty Trutanich was a part of the law firm from 2005 to 2007, before serving as a Judicial Law Clerk under the Honorable Manual L. Real of the United States District Court for the Central District of California from 2007 to 2008.

In 2008, U.S. Attorney Nicholas Trutanich joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California as an Assistant U.S. Attorney. He has handled a wide range of complex grand jury investigations and federal criminal prosecutions with his position. These include prosecuting matters involving fraud, human trafficking, illegal firearm, and immigration offenses. While working as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Nicholas Andrew Trutanich volunteered to detail to Baghdad, Iraq from 2010 to 2011, serving as a Deputy Justice Attache. He managed, served as a counsel, and coordinated various law enforcement partners, working on the ongoing counterterrorism prosecutions. Furthermore, he acted as liaison to law enforcers and the Iraqi Judiciary.

With his six-year service to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, Nicholas A. Trutanich was Deputy Chief of the Violent and Organized Crimes. He then became Chief of Staff and First Assistant Attorney General, joining the Attorney General’s Office for the District of Nevada. From 2014 to 2019, Nicholas A. Trutanich gained substantive experience in writing briefs, arguing motions, prosecuting cases, among other legal matters. He also managed and supervised nearly 400 professionals, composed of state attorneys, criminal prosecutors, civil litigators, and support personnel.

 

Litigated Matters

On September 18, 2013, Nicholas Andrew Trutanich prosecuted a case in defense of the United States against the defendant David Shumilo, known as the Russian Boy. The verdict was filed on December 22, 2014, in which Russian Boy was convicted with a 131-month sentence for corrupt and racketeer influenced organization conspiracy.

In 2019, Nicholas Trutanich announced the prosecution of former Senate Majority Leader Kelvin Atkinson for wire fraud. Atkinson pleaded guilty for filing false campaign reports and had $450,000 in expenses for his campaign without disclosing his campaign finance report. Later on, he admitted to receiving $250,00 in campaign funds for personal expenses.

 

Office Jurisdiction

Chief Federal Law Enforcer for the District of Nevada, Atty Tutranich aims to prioritize public safety through “targeted, impactful federal prosecutions.” Moreover, he wishes to promote ethics, diversity, and crime prevention. The office is in charge of federal crimes involving public corruption, firearms, financial fraud, and narcotics. Additionally, the office manages civil cases involving the United States and recovers debts owed to the United States.

Nicholas A. Trutanich oversees a staff of over 100 employees who, as he mentioned, are “dedicated public servants who are committed to doing justice.”
